It's being dubbed as a revolutionary advancement in heart care. Ochsner is now the first and only hospital in the state to complete what's called a transcatheter pulmonary heart valve replacement. Heart defects are the leading birth defects in the U.S., ranging from a hole in a heart to a poorly formed heart. This usually results in open heart surgery. But there is a new procedure being performed at Ochsner called the melody valve. This valve can be implanted without open heart surgery, resulting in fewer surgeries for the patient and a faster recovery time, as this is an outpatient procedure. The procedure can be performed on both children and adults.
