Complication rates are measured using Risk-Adjusted methods. The term "risk adjustment" means other factors are included in the measure to account for a patient's medical condition such as, age of patient, the inherit risks involved in the procedure itself, how many other medical problems a patient might have and the severity of illness.
A lower complication rate means patients experienced fewer complications during their hospital stay.
Overall the risk adjusted complication rates for Ochsner facilities are lower than most other hospitals in Louisiana and across the U.S. In 2010, patients who chose Ochsner facilities for care experienced far fewer complications than patients who chose an average American hospital for care.
