Step inside the Neuroscience ICU at Ochsner LSU Health – where expert care, rapid response, and relentless teamwork converge to transform lives. This new unit offers nurses a front-row seat to some of the region’s most complex neurological cases—and the chance to make a lasting impact, every single day.
At Ochsner LSU Health – Academic Medical Center in Shreveport, Louisiana, a new era of specialized care is on the horizon. The hospital is preparing to open a dedicated Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit, designed to meet the growing needs of patients across the Ark-La-Tex region and the Gulf. As a Level I Trauma Center, the facility already serves some of the most complex neurological cases in the region, both surgical and non-surgical.
This new unit will bring together a team of physicians and nurses trained specifically in the care of critically ill neurological patients. The goal: to provide focused, expert care that can dramatically improve outcomes. For patients facing life-altering conditions, this level of specialization can mean the difference between a full recovery and a long-term disability.
Eventually, the vision is to expand to an entire floor dedicated to neurosciences and critical care—an investment not only in infrastructure, but in the health and future of the community.
In neuro critical care, change can happen in an instant. Nurses must be sharp, responsive, and deeply attuned to their patients. Tony L., Nursing Unit Manager, explains:
“So the Neuroscience RN is a different type of nurse. They have to be conscientious, and they have to be on top of it because neurological patients can change in a heartbeat. It's not just taking vital signs. It's a thorough assessment and that has to be done every hour.”
This level of vigilance is what sets neuro nurses apart. It’s not just about monitoring. It’s about anticipating, responding, and collaborating with a team that’s always ready.
For many patients, the Neuroscience ICU is the first step on a long road to recovery. And for nurses, the journey is just as powerful. Matthew A., Supervising RN in Critical Care, shares:
“In the ICU we see the sickest of the sick being a Level I Trauma Center. We get the patients that no one else wanted to take care of, and I like seeing them come back from the lowest point in their life to the person that they used to be. I like to see them get better and hopefully live long and healthy lives.”
These moments of recovery are what fuel the team’s passion. Every success story is a testament to the skill, compassion and teamwork that define this unit.
In the Neuroscience ICU, no two days are the same. The pace is fast, the cases are complex, and the teamwork is constant. For Kendall C., Critical Care RN, that’s exactly what makes the work so meaningful:
“The thing that makes working in the Neuroscience ICU so unique and special to me is that every day it's never the same thing. Even if you are individually assigned to patients you're familiar with, you still have the opportunity to assist with your teammates' patients as well.”
This spirit of collaboration ensures that no nurse is ever alone in their work. Whether it’s jumping in to help with a procedure or offering support during a tough moment, the team is always ready to back each other up.
The Neuroscience ICU at Ochsner LSU Health isn’t just a place to work. It’s a place to grow. Nurses here are exposed to a wide range of rare and complex neurological conditions, gaining experience that’s hard to find anywhere else in the region. As Mark R., Director of Nursing for Neuroscience & Surgical ICU Services, says:
“The most interesting piece for the ICU nurses in the neurosciences division is the fact that they get to see all these wild types of cases and patients—from head trauma to brain masses to aneurysms, to patients that you would not see at any other facility around this area. You'd have to go nationwide to see these types of patients. The experience is incredible.”
This exposure not only sharpens clinical skills, but also builds confidence, resilience and a deep sense of purpose.
