PGY-2 Internal Medicine Pharmacy Residency
The Ochsner Medical Center Internal Medicine Pharmacy PGY-2 Residency is an ASHP-accredited year-long program that provides a motivated resident with a diverse experience in caring for internal medicine patients and honing their didactic teaching skills. The resident will have the chance to gain experience working with a variety of internal medicine populations and precept students from Xavier College of Pharmacy. Our broad range of electives allows the resident to gain experience in other areas of pharmacy that they may have interest. Ochsner’s variety of pharmacy practice areas will help the PGY-2 resident become proficient in a broad range of topics and develop their own practice style to become a successful clinical pharmacy specialist or clinical faculty at a college of pharmacy.
The primary training site for the program is Ochsner Medical Center a 660-bed acute care hospital serving the surrounding New Orleans area. Ochsner is dedicated to excellence in patient care, education, and research. This mission has been intricately entwined throughout all aspects of the Health System. Ochsner is one of the largest non-university based physician training centers. Pharmacists are integrally involved in all aspects of patient care with over 40 clinical pharmacists in the department.

- Research Project - Resident will be provided a list of research topics to choose from at which point they will develop a protocol, submit to the Institutional Review Board, collect data, present their research at MidSouth Residency Conference, and complete a publishable manuscript. The resident will work under the mentorship of a preceptor to enhance the resident’s skills in study design, data collection, data analysis and results reporting. The resident will also present a poster at the annual LSHP meeting.
- Continuing Education Presentation - Resident will present one 60-minute formal continuing education presentation in the fall of their resident year for the pharmacy department.
- Case Presentation - Resident will present a 60-minute formal case presentation in the spring of their resident year for the pharmacy department.
- Physician Lecture Series - Resident will present one 20-minute pharmacotherapy topic to Internal Medicine resident physicians.
- Morbidity and Mortality Presentation - In conjunction with a resident physician, the resident will present a 60-minute formal case presentation highlighting a patient error and quality improvement initiatives to the Hospital Medicine department
- Journal Club - Resident will present one journal club per year to the pharmacy department.
- University of Queensland Pharmacotherapy Lecture - Resident will present two pharmacotherapy lectures on a medicine topic to UQ medical students.
- ACCP Internal Medicine PRN Online Journal Club (if spots available)
- Staffing - Resident will work every third weekend completing clinical profile reviews including, but not limited to, renal dosing, IV to PO conversions, kinetics, review of antimicrobials, and anticoagulation monitoring for internal medicine patients. Additionally, order verification will be completed during this shift. The resident will be provided 1 research day per quarter to be used on site to work on current projects. The resident will also be provided 1 comp day per quarter which must be used before or after a weekend that is worked. These days must be approved by the residency program director and current rotation preceptor.
- Code response - The IM PGY2 resident will hold the code pager every 8 weeks during their residency. The resident will be responsible for attending all non-ICU codes between 0700-1530. The resident will always have a preceptor as a backup. The resident will be responsible for the preparation and timing of medications. If the resident does not already have ACLS certification, this will be provided during orientation month.

- Successful completion of all formal presentations and longitudinal projects, including a research manuscript
- Submission of a complete electronic residency notebook
