Claire Schwegel, DNP, FNP-BC, MS, RN, an ANCC Board Certified Family Nurse Practitioner with clinical interests in stroke, brain aneurysms, subarachnoid hemorrhage, arteriovenous malformations, cavernous malformations, carotid artery stenosis, intracranial stenosis, and head and neck tumors, has joined Ochsner Medical Center in the Department of Interventional Radiology. She previously spent three years as the Cerebrovascular Center Nurse Practitioner and Specialty Coordinator for the Department of Neurosurgery at The Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City.
Dr. Schwegel received her Doctoral Degree from Columbia University's School of Nursing in 2018. She received her Masters and Bachelors degrees in the field of Nursing from Columbia University, and additionally completed a second Bachelors of Science degree in Neuroscience at Tulane University. Dr. Schwegel holds a faculty appointment as a clinical instructor at Columbia University's School of Nursing, and is a professional member of Sigma Theta Tau and The Society of Neurointerventional Surgery.
Dr. Schwegel has been published in academic journals, including the Journal of Neurointerventional Surgery, and has been asked to speak at the Society for Vascular and Interventional Neurology as well as the New York Cardiology Symposium. She has an immense passion for nursing research and advancing the practice of nursing, and dedicates herself annually to philanthropic missions aimed at teaching and training future nurses around the world.
Dr. Schwegel believes strongly in looking at the patient holistically, and focuses heavily on patient education and preventative care. She is a strong advocate for patients rights, and a believes that trust, honesty, listening, and caring are fundamental in positive patient-provider relationships.
