Dr. Shilpa Amara is a senior physician and the Medical Director for the Ochsner Mental Wellness Program. Her specialties include consultation liaison psychiatry, emergency psychiatry, telemedicine and general adult psychiatry. She received her Doctor of Medicine degree from St. Matthews University, school of medicine in Grand Cayman. She then completed her residency program training in psychiatry at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center-Ochsner Health System in New Orleans. Dr. Amara received the Roger Hatchette Award of Excellence in Emergency Psychiatry upon the completion of her residency.

Dr. Amara is board-certified by American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and has been on staff at Ochsner since 2016. She is also certified to administer Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation. She received the University of Queensland Teacher Excellence Award in 2019. She also was awarded Faculty Member of the year by the LSUHSC-Ochsner Adult Psychiatry residency for her dedication and commitment to residents in 2021. She is an active member of the American Psychiatric Association, Louisiana Psychiatric Medical Association, Academy of Consult Liaison, American Association of Addiction Psychiatry and Clinical TMS Society.
