The use of minimally invasive surgical techniques combined with a multidisciplinary, protocol-driven, team-based approach to postoperative care allows patients to recover faster, experience fewer complications and return home to convalesce sooner. Patients undergoing esophagectomy at Ochsner have an Average Length of Stay Index of less than 1.0, indicating that they stay in the hospital for a shorter time than expected based on patient-speciic characteristics.

Observed/Expected Length of Stay Index
ALOSI, the Average Length of Stay Index, compares the observed average length of stay (ALOS) against the expected average length of stay, risk-adjusted for patient-speciic characteristics. An index of 1.0 indicates an observed average length of stay exactly equal to the expected average length of stay (green dashed line). An index less than 1.0 indicates an average length of stay shorter than expected, and an index greater than 1.0 indicates an average length of stay longer than expected.
