The Ochsner Hospital for Children provides patients and their families care in specialties ranging from pediatric oncology and pediatric cardiology to pediatric organ transplants. Ochsner is proud to stand at the forefront of pediatric health.
Offering specialized services from our Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and Neonatal Intensive Care Units, we are here to help families get through difficult health scares. We are proud to serve as the home to the future Mother's Milk Bank of Louisiana at Ochsner Baptist. Our Reach Out and Read Program, which is entirely funded by the generosity of our donors, offers age appropriate books to children from birth to five years at each of their well visits. The goal of the program is to give young children, some of whom have limited access to books, a foundation for success by encouraging families to read aloud together.
Understanding that kids don't always get sick at convenient times, Ochsner offers same-day appointments, extended hours and Saturday appointments at many of our clinics.
Bryce and Amanda Percle: Newlyweds and Donors
Our donors often commit selfless acts of charity that serve as a reminder of the exceptional good within our donor family. No example stands out more than that of Bryce and Amanda Percle. When Bryce and Amanda Percle were married in June of 2015, they decided to honor the legacy of an important member of their family by asking that their guests make a donation to the Ochsner Pediatric Family Assistance Fund in her memory rather than bring a gift.
Byrce’s sister, Charisse, was born with tricuspid atresia, a heart defect that causes one of the valves between two of the heart’s chambers to form incorrectly. Charisse had stents put in on two different occasions and had an open-heart surgery at Ochsner, but unfortunately, her condition continued to deteriorate and she passed away in 2003 at the age of 22. Throughout Charisse’s life, the Percle family, who lived first in Thibodeaux and then in Lafayette, traveled back and forth to New Orleans for her care. “Fortunately, my family could cover these costs,” Bryce said. “But so many families are encumbered by expenses when their children are ill. Ochsner Pediatric Family Assistance Fund provides such an important service, which is why Amanda and I are committed to supporting it.”
The Pediatric Family Assistance Fund serves to help families with the unexpected costs of long term illnesses. The fund helps with travel expenses, hotel stays, groceries and even cell phones for patients whose families cannot be with them at times during their stay. The fund, which is managed by a team of social workers who work with families to determine how to best meet their needs, helps the families of up to 150 pediatric patients per month.
Thank you to Bryce and Amanda for their generosity and commitment to Ochsner pediatrics. We are so humbled to be a part of Charisse’s legacy by helping children suffering from long term illnesses in her honor.
A Word from Dr. William "Billy" Lennarz, System Chair of Pediatrics, Associate Medical Director, Ochsner Health System
At Ochsner Hospital for Children, we offer the most advanced and comprehensive care possible. Our Children’s only Emergency Department (ED) is equipped to handle any pediatric emergency, small or big, 24 hours per day. Our ED focuses 100% on children and provides care that is delivered by a team specially trained to care for kids. More than 30 pediatric specialties support our emergency department team, some of which cannot be found anywhere else in this region.
It is because of our donors that we are accomplishing these goals. We currently are home to the only Pediatric Heart Transplant program in the state and are happy to have the recent addition of congenital heart surgeon, Dr. Ben Peeler. We are also happy to introduce Dr. Lawrence Haber, a pediatric orthopedic/spine surgeon, to the region.
As we work to continue developing programs that provide cutting-edge services for children, developed and delivered by teams of specialized caregivers, we recognize that like our patients, our donors are at the center of all that we do. They create change and allow for advancements so that our patients can live long and happy lives.
Thank you for being a committed member of the Ochsner Hospital for Children family and for helping to take care of our smallest and bravest patients.
