By focusing on proactive healthcare, iO helps Ochsner intervene earlier or even prevent adverse outcomes. With access to Ochsner’s extensive clinical data and collaboration with provider teams, iO quickly designs, tests, and implements real-world solutions to tackle some of healthcare’s toughest challenges.
Uncovering hidden health issues
In 2018, Ochsner partnered with Microsoft and Epic to develop an AI model that predicts patient deterioration within a 4-hour window. This allows a rapid response team to address issues before they escalate. During a 90-day pilot, the program reduced cardiac arrests and other adverse events outside the ICU by 44%. The model is now used across Ochsner hospitals and earned the 2018 Microsoft Health Innovation Award.
Preventing infection
iO’s data scientists and clinicians are building models to predict which patients are at higher risk for hospital-acquired infections like C. difficile, sepsis, and MRSA. These models, combined with targeted interventions, have already shown significant success in reducing infection rates, helping to save lives and improve patient outcomes.
