Resources and Services
Chabert’s Medical library provides all traditional library research and reference services. Relevant books professionally recommended for the medical specialties are categorized according to the National Library of Medicine classification system. The book collection can be searched using the online catalog. All books, except reference, are available for circulation to staff and students with a valid Ochsner ID. Books may be borrowed in person during regular staff hours for a period of three weeks. Portions of a book may be scanned and emailed or copied for use outside of the library.
The Medical Library includes a print collection of core medical journals which are restricted to on-site use only. Medical Library services include literature searches for clinical and health related topics.
Chabert’s Medical Library shares access to the Ochsner Medical Library online resources. Electronic resources are accessible in Epic and through Ochsner’s website. Links to resources for access to subscribed content only work for computers that can be recognized as belonging to Ochsner. All computers accessing the internet via the Ochsner network are automatically recognized and grant access to all subscribed content as follows:
- Evidence-based, point-of-care decision support databases
- Leading medical, health science, and healthcare administration journals
- Well focused selection of books (electronic and print)
- Repository for all Ochsner related publications
- User friendly access to consumer health and patient education information

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I request assistance?
Research and reference service requests can be made anytime via email and phone or in person during business hours.
How do I get materials (articles, chapters, or books) not in the Chabert or Ochsner Medical Library collections?
Ochsner uses a system called ILLiad to process interlibrary loan requests. ILLiad requires registration (at no charge) for a user account. ILLiad account holders can submit ILL requests quickly and easily from many of Ochsner’s online resources. To register for an Ochsner- affiliated ILLiad account, visit the Ochsner Medical Library homepage.
Are there charges for services?
Medical Library resources and services are provided at no charge. There is also no charge for interlibrary loan or document delivery. However, patrons who fail to return borrowed materials on time may lose good standing for borrowing privileges. Patrons who fail to return borrowed materials are billed the replacement cost plus a $25.00 processing fee for each unreturned item.
Are different types of services available for different types of patrons?
All services are available to all patrons, with a few exceptions:
- Checking out of materials is available only to patrons with a valid Ochsner ID.
- Interlibrary loan service is available only to current Ochsner-affiliated patrons.
- Help for a student is limited to general use of Medical Library resources – staff does not perform searches, research, or other assigned class work.
How can I learn more about the Medical Library?
Library staff can demonstrate or offer guidance in using Medical Library resources. This can vary from a brief overview to customized, hands-on sessions. Please contact staff for details.
