The Xavier University and Ochsner Health Physician Assistant Program was created to address the critical need for clinical care providers. The demand for physician assistants is particularly acute and is expected to increase by 37 percent over the next several years. Adding to this challenge, Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi rank 44th, 49th and 50th in the United States in terms of available physician assistants. Compounding the healthcare disparities that are becoming increasingly apparent, only 3.6 percent of physician assistants identify as Black or African American. The Xavier and Ochsner Physician Assistant program enrolled its first cohort of 40 students this past January and will enroll another 40 every January thereafter. Their goal: to educate physician assistants to become ethical, competent and compassionate professionals dedicated to providing superior healthcare and contributing to a more just, humane and healthier community.
