Cancer Care: Baton Rouge

Ochsner Health and MD Anderson Cancer Center are clinically integrated to advance care even further, right here in Baton Rouge. With a shared mission of ending cancer, we are providing cancer treatments that are the most advanced in the nation.

With a holistic, patient-centric approach, Ochsner MD Anderson’s expert team provides comprehensive care to patients. A multidisciplinary team of doctors, clinicians and support specialists offer services to treat the entire person. Support professionals include nutritionists, nurse navigators, social workers, physical therapists, acupuncturists, and others. We offer groundbreaking research and innovative therapies, including access to select clinical trials available to eligible patients.

Through this collaboration with MD Anderson, Ochsner is the first and only provider in Louisiana with a fully integrated cancer program based on MD Anderson's standards and treatment plans. Ochsner is one of only seven MD Anderson partners in the country. It joins a collaborative network of hospitals and health care systems dedicated to advancing MD Anderson’s mission and to improving the quality and accessibility of cancer care and research.

As such, Ochsner MD Anderson patients in southeastern Louisiana receive care based on the same protocols and practice standards provided at MD Anderson in Houston, and benefit from integration with its clinicians and researchers. Ochsner MD Anderson experts adhere to the philosophy, process, and guidelines of MD Anderson’s clinical leadership, and they provide a full range of multidisciplinary care options, including medical oncology, surgery, and radiation.

At Ochsner, appointments are scheduled with your comfort and convenience in mind. Team members keep compatible office hours to make it easier for you to see more than one doctor on the same day. When you’re not feeling well, you want a team that works around your needs, not theirs.

Our oncology nurse navigators serve as a patient liaison to help patients and family members navigate the complex healthcare system. The nurse navigator will establish early contact with the cancer patients to identify and eliminate barriers to timely diagnosis and treatment. They will assess clinical, emotional, spiritual, psychosocial, financial and other patient needs. They work with the multidisciplinary team to provide improved comprehensive oncology services to our patients.

The navigators are responsible for scheduling test, procedures, appointments and treatments, as well as initiating and completing the survivorship care plan. Our Nurse Navigator’s assist in directing patients and families to available community resources and supportive services. They also serve as a clinical resource with expertise in oncology care management and help to reinforce education with patients and families.
