When you receive a cancer diagnosis, there’s a lot more to consider then treating the disease. Our Oncologic Shared Services are programs and specialties within your oncology team that support you through the treatment, providing side effect relief, psychological support, nutritional guidance, and many other benefits.
We strongly encourage our patients to take advantage of any of the below services that may make this journey easier. We are happy to review these services with you during your consult or follow up visits. They are always available to our patients at any point during or after their treatment.

Ochsner is committed to changing the lives that we touch.
Depending on a patient’s situation and the particular drug, he or she may get chemotherapy once a day, once a week or once a month. Chemotherapy is often given in cycles. A patient may, for example, get therapy for six weeks, and then have time to rest before the next cycle begins. Whether treatment is for cure, control or palliative care, this dedicated team will support you and your family during this difficult time.
Chemotherapy (“chemo”) is a treatment for cancer that uses drugs to kill cancer cells. It is a systemic treatment, where the drugs travel throughout the whole body to reach cancer cells that may have spread to other areas of the body.
Oncology Clinical Research
For over 70 years, Ochsner has been dedicated to cancer research and new cancer treatment development, bringing innovations to the fight against cancer— including more clinical trials than anywhere else in the region.
Patients may stay at Ochsner’s Brent House Hotel or at the American Cancer Society’s Patrick F. Taylor Hope Lodge with a caregiver. Ochsner can help coordinate housing arrangements if needed.
The Oncology Nurse Navigators serve as a patient liaison to help patients and family members navigate the complex healthcare system. The Nurse Navigator will establish early contact with the cancer patients to identify and eliminate barriers to timely diagnosis and treatment.
Palliative Medicine & Supportive Care
Palliative Medicine and Supportive Care is specialized medical care for people living with a serious illness. This type of care is focused on providing relief from the symptoms and stress of a serious illness. The goal is to improve quality of life for both the patient and the family.

Cancer Genetics and High Risk
While most cancers are not caused by a genetic predisposition that we inherit from a parent and are born with, identifying the presence of such a genetic problem can be helpful to individuals with cancer and to their families.
