Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) follows different principals and uses different technology than a typical x-ray. The patient, or their specific body part, is placed in a super-conducting magnet and currents moving through a series of coils create a strong magnetic field. A “pulse” causes the protons in hydrogen nuclei of the body's tissues to resonate to varying degrees, generating a signal or electromagnetic wave. This generated signal varies according to the properties of the tissue and the settings of the magnet. The signal is detected by the receiving coil and, after complex data processing, an image is displayed on the monitor.
Most MRI Units generate a magnetic field strength more than 10,000 times the earth’s magnetic field! Patients with cardiac pacemakers, cochlear implants, some prosthetic heart valves, bone growth stimulators or neurostimulators (TENS), brain aneurysm clips or coils, metal fragments and some penile prostheses cannot undergo MRI tests.

Insightful Technology Helps Humanize the MRI Experience
Ochsner Medical Center on Jefferson Highway is pleased to introduce a new option for Magnetic Resonance Imaging – a Wide Bore MRI. This differs from the traditional tunnel-style magnetic resonance imager in which some patients feel confined and uncomfortable. This Wide Bore MRI is more open to comfortably accommodate all patients.
The 70cm patient bore includes bright inner bore lighting and a flared gantry to lead to a more open experience, with nearly a half foot more space in diameter.
The patient-friendly design accommodates patients who are usually difficult to scan, such as larger, claustrophobic, elderly or very young patients or those who are in pain and require a larger imaging system.
Coil designs made through the use of thinner, lightweight flexible material can be used with a variety of body types, allowing easier patient positioning. Crafted to embrace the patient, these flexible coils make for a more relaxed scan experience.

The Wide Bore MRI offers the same advanced technology and imaging results as traditional MRI scanners. The magnet supports a 70cm patient gantry and gives a larger field of vision for coverage and image quality. The large, usable field of view enables proper imaging of off-center anatomy, such as a shoulder or hip.It produces accurate, high-resolution images that can lead to a more precise diagnosis.

Wide Bore MRI with Caring Suite
An MRI environment built just for you, which includes calming sights and comforting sounds. Ochsner St. Anne General Hospital uses the Wide Bore MRI with Caring Suite technology.
This technology, which is the first of its kind in the region and one of only a few in the world, offers a more comfortable, less clinical environment for patients needing an MRI.

The MRI features a larger and more open tunnel that patients lie in to receive their MRI scan. It also includes Caring Suite technology, which is a unique software package that is customizable to the patient and uses images, sounds and lights to create a more relaxing and soothing atmosphere. Images themes that are available include: snowcapped mountains, a bubbling stream with water gurgling, the birds singing and fish splashing.
This machine will make it easier for patients of all sizes and types to have testing performed, including those with claustrophobia by making them more comfortable during the scan.
“This is the future of MRI technology right here in our area,” says Jenny LeBoeuf, MD, Ochsner St. Anne General Hospital’s MRI fellowship-trained radiologist and the only MRI fellowship-trained radiologist in the region. “This method of fostering a calming environment in the midst of a clinical procedure room is truly revolutionary and will benefit our local patients tremendously.” LeBoeuf says.
