You would drive to the ends of the earth to get the care your child needs to fight cancer. Fortunately, you don’t have to. As part of Ochsner Cancer Institute, the leading cancer center in the Gulf South, patients at Ochsner Hospital for Children receive a level of care equal to that offered by the most revered pediatric cancer centers in America. The difference is we offer it close to home. Never underestimate the healing power of a child’s own pillow.
Since 1954, Ochsner has been leading the fight against cancers in kids and young adults. In addition to caring for children with cancer, our team of pediatric hematologists treats a full range of blood disorders, including anemia, sickle cell disease, thalassemia, hemophilia, bone marrow failure and bleeding and clotting disorders.
Why Ochsner Hospital for Children for Pediatric Oncology Care?
At Ochsner Hospital for Children, some of the country’s most dedicated and passionate pediatric specialists, including oncologists, surgeons, neurosurgeons and radiation oncologists, work together to develop a personalized plan of care for each child. Referring pediatricians remain part of our team every step of the way. Our patients also benefit from the wealth of resources available to us as part of the Ochsner Cancer Institute. Together, there’s no cancer our team can’t treat.
Just as children are not just little adults, pediatric cancers are different from adult cancers, and successful care requires experience in a wide range of specialized therapies. Studies show that patients who participate in research have better outcomes. Our pediatric patients are currently benefiting from clinical trials for all kinds of cancers. We are an active participant in the Children’s Oncology Group (COG), the National Cancer Institute-sponsored collaborative clinical trial and research consortium in the United States. This participation enables Ochsner to offer cutting-edge therapeutic options for children in New Orleans and the Gulf South region. In addition, as part of the Ochsner Cancer Institute we are able to offer clinical trials available through other national consortiums such as the Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology, the ECOG-ACRIN Cancer Research Group and the NCI National Clinical Trials Network.
Cancer Care That’s Personal
Ochsner may be the largest medical center in the region, but cancer care at Ochsner Hospital for Children is personal. Our patients typically see the same doctors and the same pediatric nurses every time they visit. Our clinic is a happy, caring, family-oriented environment, filled with laughter, friends and caregivers who bond with patients and families. There are fun play areas for children and teenagers and our child life specialists ensure that every visit is as fun and stress-free as possible.
Like young children, adolescents and young adults fighting cancer have their own specific needs. Learn how Ochsner Cancer Center is addressing these needs.
Childhood Cancers Affect the Whole Family
Kids with cancer and their families often require special care to cope emotionally.
