What is interventional radiology?

Interventional radiology is a sub-specialty of radiology that uses minimally invasive, image-guided procedures to diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions, often with less pain, shorter recovery times, and fewer complications compared to traditional surgery.

  • Minimally invasive: Smaller incisions, less pain, and faster recovery
  • Outpatient options: Many procedures are performed without overnight hospital stay
  • Advanced imaging: Real-time guidance for precision and safety

Our doctors use advanced imaging and minimally invasive techniques to diagnose and treat complex conditions. Some procedures include:

  • Ablation therapies: Destroying tumors using heat or cold.
  • Angiography: Imaging of blood vessels to detect blockages or abnormalities.
  • Drainage procedures: Treating abscesses or fluid collections.
  • Embolization procedures: Blocking abnormal blood flow to treat tumors or bleeding. Ochsner Health is ranked in the top three programs nationally for radioembolization.
  • Image-guided biopsies: Precise tissue sampling for accurate diagnosis.
  • Thrombolysis and thrombectomy: Breaking down or removing blood clots.
  • Vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty: Stabilizing spinal fractures.
