FAQs

Pediatric allergy testing is usually performed by skin prick tests or blood tests. Skin tests involve placing tiny amounts of allergens on the skin and making a light prick. If a red, raised bump develops within 20 minutes, it indicates an allergy. Blood tests can be used to measure the level of allergy-specific IgE antibodies in the blood. In some cases, controlled oral food challenges may be ordered under medical supervision.

Referrals to see specialists often depend on your health insurance plan. If you have an HMO, you generally need a referral from your primary care pediatrician. If you have a PPO, you can usually book directly with a specialist.

Ochsner diagnoses and treats all types of food allergies and intolerances, with a special focus on the major allergens: milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, soybeans and sesame. Ochsner provides comprehensive testing, evaluation and management for pediatric and adult allergic conditions, including anaphylaxis and eczema.
