Ochsner is a homegrown institution devoted to exemplary patient care, medical research and education, and community service. Our mission statement states our purpose: to serve, heal, educate, lead and innovate.
We believe that a successful Ochsner is vital to the community. With our scale, the execution of our mission makes the city, region and state a better place to live. Our institution, with more than 10,000 employees, touches the lives of several hundred thousand patients, and we have more than $1 billion in economic effect. What Ochsner does really matters, and we take that responsibility very seriously. We do it well and strive to do it better. In medical care, we produce the best medical outcomes in the state and have earned numerous awards for excellence. We educate numerous medical students, nurses, techs and more than 350 physicians receiving post-graduate training. Combined with our research, Ochsner is a critical academic resource for the state of Louisiana.
While patient care, research and education are somewhat self-evident, community service and benefit are less clear and more subject to individual interpretation. Because of our size and capabilities, we have the ability to affect the future of our region. With so many needs in the broader community, we devised some principles to guide us as we make decisions.

- Participate or lead in those areas where our presence matters. Our contribution to success must be necessary and evident.
- Concentrate on those areas which play to our strengths, so we are more likely to succeed in our efforts.
- Focus on the correction of root causes of problems rather than on the symptoms of those problems.
- When possible, partner with others, so we can both succeed for the benefit of the community. Many of the major problems which confront us are beyond the ability of only one organization to solve.
We like the quote, "Good health doesn't begin at the doctor's office - it starts where we live, work, learn and play." Our diverse clinics and hospitals reflect our belief that healthcare should be close to home; we should be where people live, in their neighborhood and communities. Our focus on employees and their families involve them in their health at work; our many partnerships with schools focus on learning; and, we target where our neighbors and patients play.
You can't change a region with only one effort; we must orchestrate many to achieve our goals. Join us as we work together to create the healthy and hopeful future that this state deserves.
