Why choose Ochsner for men's health?

From preventive screenings to leading-edge prostate health treatments, Ochsner Health offers comprehensive services to support men in reaching their healthcare goals.

Men need to be proactive in monitoring and maintaining their health due to a higher risk of serious health conditions, such as heart disease and lung cancer. Still, many wait to see a doctor until everyday life is impacted by a condition like erectile dysfunction or low testosterone, and they don’t realize these common conditions may be a sign of something more serious. Others simply don't know where to start.

Ochsner men's health doctors take the guesswork out of managing your healthcare needs. They work with you to build a foundation of good health and customize your care to address your unique concerns.

Coordinated, collaborative care at your fingertips

Ochsner is proud to have a culture of collaboration. We have built a multidisciplinary team of experts committed to putting our patients first.

Our men's health specialists are connected to every other Ochsner doctor through our robust electronic medical record system. This makes it easy for primary care and specialty doctors to discuss treatment options, share test results and coordinate all aspects of your care.

Use your MyOchsner portal to message your care team when it's convenient for you. Plus, stay in the loop and up to date on appointments, medications, preventive health reminders and recent test results at any time of the day.

Expert men's health care close to home

Initial specialty appointments are provided in person at the Men's Health Clinic within the Department of Urology at Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans. Depending on your customized care plan, follow-up appointments or ongoing treatments may happen in-person at the Men's Health Clinic, through virtual visits with the Men's Health Clinic team, or with your local Ochsner primary care doctor or urologist in one of our many convenient locations.

Men's health conditions

The Ochsner Men's Health Clinic offers advanced, evidence-based treatment for men experiencing a wide range of conditions, including:

Many men's health concerns may indicate a serious underlying medical condition. Diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure can affect men's sexual health and function. Because of this connection, seeing a specialist for a men's health concern may also boost your overall health and wellness. Similarly, low testosterone is common as men age, and this condition can seriously impact a man’s quality of life.

Our expert team can also provide you with the most up-to-date recommendations for preventive care and routine screenings based on your age and unique health history. They can answer your questions about men's health supplements and provide you with resources for general wellness.

Men's health treatment options

Ochsner Men's Health Clinic is at the forefront of care. Don't give up even if you've tried treatment in the past without success. We offer innovative treatment options to address your particular care needs, including options not found elsewhere in the region.

In addition to medication and traditional surgical treatment options, we offer minimally invasive, low-risk procedures to treat benign prostate hyperplasia, also known as enlarged prostate.

Ochsner is one of only a few centers of excellence in the region using the UroLift System, a minimally invasive procedure that relieves symptoms of enlarged prostate.

We also offer Rezūm Water Vapor Therapy, a noninvasive treatment that uses steam to shrink the prostate with a low risk of side effects.

Both UroLift and Rezūm Water Vapor Therapy are outpatient procedures that let you return home the same day with minimal downtime.

Ochsner Men's Health uses the UroNav guided fusion biopsy system, which combines MRI and ultrasound to provide more accurate prostate biopsies.

If prostate cancer is found, we are the only facility in the region to offer high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) as a treatment option. HIFU is a minimally invasive and effective option that targets and kills cancer cells and has a low risk of side effects. This treatment may be particularly beneficial for men over age 65, who have obesity or are not good candidates for surgical treatment.

Oral medications are commonly used to treat erectile dysfunction. Still, other options are available if these medications don't work well for you, including:

  • Hormonal treatments
  • Injectable medication
  • Penile implants

There are many possible causes of male infertility. It's essential to work with an expert to determine the cause of the issue and make a treatment plan. Ochsner Men's Health Clinic is home to southern Louisiana’s only specially trained male fertility expert, Eric Laborde, MD.

Our clinic offers surgical and nonsurgical methods to treat male infertility. We also work closely with in vitro fertilization (IVF) doctor in the region when needed.

Research and clinical trials

In addition to our standard treatment options, Ochsner Men's Health Clinic is actively involved in research and clinical trials to bring innovative, research-based treatments to our patients. Talk with your doctor if you are interested in learning more about current research and available clinical trials.

Health is more than just physical. Men's mental health matters, too. Your Ochsner men's health care team can help connect you to mental health services and support that fits your needs. For men going through cancer, we also provide regular support groups.

Ochsner is committed to providing accessible, high-quality care to all our patients. We understand that men who have sex with men may have added questions or concerns regarding their health or care options. Our LGBTQ+ Health Care team is available to offer additional support when needed.

FAQs

Primary care doctors help men manage chronic conditions, maintain overall health and wellness, and prevent or treat common illnesses. They will refer you to a specialist when needed. Men's health specialists are experts in medical conditions that are particular to men, such as erectile dysfunction. These specialists have access to a broader range of medications, technology and advanced treatment options.

Either one can be a great place to start. It may make sense to make your first appointment in the Ochsner Men's Health Clinic if you don't already have a regular primary care doctor. However, if you already have a primary care doctor who knows you well, it may be beneficial to start with them. It's common to have both a primary care doctor and one or more specialists on your care team. No matter who you see first, all your Ochsner care team members will work together to get you the care you need.
