Ochsner Health is the leading nonprofit healthcare provider in the Gulf South. Ochsner inspires healthier lives and stronger communities through our mission to serve, heal, lead, educate and innovate.
You’re in your final semester of nursing school, balancing studies, clinical rotations and NCLEX prep, all while making big decisions about your future. Like many new grads, Kamryn LaSalle stood at the same crossroads. With the help of Ochsner’s Student Talent team, Kamryn found her fit on the Ochsner Lafayette General Med Surg Unit.
“I wasn’t sure what I wanted at first,” Kamryn said. “When Ochsner visited my school, I reached out to learn more about opportunities for new grads. The recruiter explained my options, showed me which units were hiring and helped me schedule a shadow shift. I knew right away it was the perfect fit. Now, I can’t see myself anywhere else.”
Kamryn’s success reflects what Ochsner’s Student Talent team aims to deliver – tailored support, clear guidance and a smooth transition from student to professional.
Starting your career as a new nurse or allied health professional is exciting, but we know it’s a big step. That’s why our recruiters work with you, from choosing a unit to preparing for interviews. Every step is designed to support and empower you.
We spoke with two of our senior Student Talent Recruiters, Katelyn Ehrhardt and Taylor Daigle, to share how the team helps new grads succeed and how you can prepare for your career.
How does the student talent team help new grads?
Our team focuses on one mission - helping students step confidently into their first clinical role. For many, this is the beginning of their professional journeys, and we’re here to guide the way.
“We partner with schools to connect students to professional opportunities,” Taylor said. “From day one, our goal is to be a reliable resource in your corner.”
Building trust is at the heart of our work.
“We take the time to understand each student,” Katelyn said. “You’re not just another name in our system. We want to find the role that’s right for you and help you feel ready to take it on.”
What happens during the hiring process?
We want your experience to feel simple and supportive. Here’s how the hiring process works:
1. Applying to a role
Submit your application about six months before graduation. After reviewing your background and preferences, our recruiters quickly reach out to qualified candidates.
“We do our best to contact all qualified candidates in a timely manner for an initial phone screen,” Katelyn said.
2. Perfecting your resume
We encourage all applicants to submit a polished and up to date resume. “Make sure your resume highlights clinical experience, certifications, and skills,” Taylor said. “It shows us your strengths and where you can excel.”
3. Completing the phone screen
During the first interview, we learn about your goals and strengths. We also walk you through the next steps. And remember first impressions are key.
“We love hearing about those clinical moments that inspired you,” Taylor said. “That tells us a lot about your passion and potential.”
4. Interviewing and shadowing with a department
We’ll help you schedule a department interview and a shadow shift. Most shadow shifts last two to four hours and provide a glimpse into the unit’s environment.
“The shadow shift is critical,” Katelyn said. “It’s not just about us choosing you; it’s about you choosing the right environment for your future. Consider it an extended part of your interview.”
How do you prepare for the hiring process?
Use these strategies to stand out when you apply.
Above all, stay flexible.
“Sometimes the best roles are in places you didn’t expect, and that’s okay” Taylor said.
“Your first role might not be your dream unit, but it can help you build the experience, skills and confidence to get there,” adds Katelyn.
Your healthcare career journey starts here
Now six months into her career, Kamryn is already looking forward to what’s ahead. She hopes to become a preceptor in the future so she can support new grads as they begin their own careers.
Her advice? “Ask the questions! You don’t know what you don’t know. No question is a dumb question!”
