Misty Plana, a medical assistant at Ochsner Health, wanted to further her career by getting a Licensed Practical Nurse degree. Fortunately, because of Ochsner's partnership with Delgado Community College, she was able to enroll in one of Louisiana’s Top 10 nursing programs while also keeping her full-time job and benefits.

“Ochsner came up with this program, and I said, ‘I have to better my future, and for my kids as well,” Misty said. “And I’ve learned a lot of new personal skills that I can use in everyday life, such as being more empathetic and having more compassion.”

The Ochsner Center for Nursing and Allied Health, where Misty attends, was opened by Ochsner and Delgado in 2023 to address the growing demands of healthcare by training future nurses and allied health professionals. It brings the Delgado Charity School of Nursing and most Division of Allied Health programs under one roof, hosting RN, LPN, Radiologic Technologist, Respiratory Therapy, Surgical Technologist, Pharmacy Technologist programs and more.

The state-of-the art center boasts advanced simulation labs and programs aligned with the latest industry standards and practices. Students are provided with hands-on training and real-world experience, ensuring they are well-prepared to meet the challenges of modern healthcare.

Strengthening Our Community

The establishment of the Ochsner Center for Nursing and Allied Health marked a significant milestone in the effort to improve community health outcomes and addresses the critical shortage of healthcare professionals in the region.

High standards upheld by Delgado also ensure that graduates are not only academically proficient but also practically skilled, making them highly sought after in the job market. It empowers students to become leaders in their respective fields by bridging the gap between academic learning and professional practice.

For example, instructors in the surgical tech program at the Ochsner Center for Nursing and Allied Health must have at least five years in the operating room and a background in education and teaching, said Leonard Goody, instructor of Delgado Surgical Technology at the Ochsner Center for Nursing and Allied Health.
