General Guidelines

Patient Classification

Visitor Guideline

Infusion Suites & Pain Procedural Areas

1 Adult Support Person allowed

Outpatient Surgery

May allow 2 Adult Support Persons (1 being the designated driver) for all surgical/procedural patients. A breastfeeding mother is allowed her infant and 2 adult Support Persons.

Emergency Department (ED)

Adults may have 1 Adult Support Person, and minors may have both guardians.

Volumes and situations can be unpredictable, therefore, visitation rules may be temporarily altered, as well as the number of support persons may be limited in waiting lobby.

Labor & Delivery Unit

L&D/Recovery: 4 Adult visitors at a time during labor and postpartum in LDR; 2 Adult visitors at a time in the recovery room; 2 Adult visitors during delivery in the LDR suite and 1 Adult visitor in the OR.

OBED: 1 Adult visitor at a time.

Inpatient (Mother Baby Unit)

4 visitors allowed at a time. Only siblings of newborn allowed. Number of siblings do not contribute to the visitor count.

Inpatient and Intensive Care Unit (ICU)

2 visitors allowed at a time (additional visitors may swap in and out except for patients in isolation (ex, COVID positive). One adult Support Person allowed 24/7. Visitors must be 12 and over in ICU

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

2 visitors at the bedside at a time. Visitors must be 12 or older. Siblings (3 and older) of patient allowed to visit with parents as a family unit. During RSV season, visitation of children may be restricted.

A justified limitation of one visitor per patient will be enforced due to infection control situations i.e., Covid, RSV.

Up to 4 visitors may be allowed at a time. For consults and family meetings* only 1 Patient Representative allowed.

*Consults & family meetings must be prearranged with the Nursing Unit and Security Leaders.


Close family and friends allowed to visit 4 at a time 24/7. Additional Visitors may swap out.


Members of the clergy do not count toward per day restrictions.


A Doula is part of the medical team and does not count as a visitor.

Exceptions may be granted on a case-by-case basis.

Units may further limit visitation as needed. Non-compliant or disruptive visitors will be asked to leave the facility.

Volunteer Services

At Ochsner Health, volunteers are an integral part of the service system. Volunteer opportunities to assist with patient and non-patient needs are available throughout the institution.

Volunteer shifts are flexible, with morning and afternoon times available to match most schedules. Volunteer benefits include free parking, discounts at campus restaurants and gift shops, and the use of Ochsner's medical library. Attendance at many of Ochsner's educational workshops and events is also offered.

Additionally, active volunteers who work four hours or more daily are provided complimentary meals.

Additional Information

The Ochsner Baptist campus has many open areas to serve as a waiting or resting area.

The Clara Wing has a large, spacious family waiting room on the third floor. This waiting room has access to free Wi-Fi, a flat-screen TV and a comfortable seating area.

The Clara Lobby is a welcoming space for visitors near our café, with ample seating and free Wi-Fi.

The surgery waiting room at Ochsner Baptist is available on the first floor of the Magnolia Building.
