What is Sleep Medicine?

Sleep medicine is a medical specialty devoted to the diagnosis and therapy of sleep disturbances and disorders. Lack of sleep or the presence of undiagnosed sleep disorders can result in serious health conditions, which range from simple snoring to serious life-threatening events. Our clinic specializes in diagnosing, evaluating, treating and managing these sleep disorders in all age groups. Sleep medicine can be used to treat sleep disorders such as:

  • Sleep Apnea
  • Insomnia
  • Restless Leg Syndrome
  • Snoring

Sleep Testing

We offer a variety of sleep tests to evaluate your condition and pinpoint what may be causing your sleep problems. Using the insights gathered, our specialists can create a treatment plan to address your disorder and help restore normal sleep behavior for a healthier quality of life. Our sleep tests include:

  • Electrooculogram (EOG): a test that records eye movements during Rapid-Eye Movement (REM) sleep to monitor wakefulness and sleep patterns.
  • Home Sleep Test or Home Sleep Apnea Test (HST or HSAT): a patient take-home test that evaluates breathing patterns during sleep.
  • Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT): a test that measures how quickly you fall asleep during the day and is used to detect narcolepsy.
  • Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT): a test that measures how well you can stay awake during the day, especially during treatment to gauge effectiveness.
  • Polysomnogram (PSG): an overnight sleep study that analyzes sleep metrics and behavior.

How do I know if I need a sleep test?

The Sleep Center of Acadiana at Ochsner Lafayette General Medical Center is designed specifically to diagnose and treat sleep disorders. If you are consistently feeling tired or unrested throughout the day, fall asleep unexpectedly or are experiencing difficulty sleeping during the night, you may want to consider sleep testing. One of our neurologists will meet with you in an initial consultation to decide if testing is needed. Sleep tests are usually recommended for those who are overweight, have Type II Diabetes or struggle with snoring.

What are the benefits of treating a sleep disorder?

Treating sleep disorders helps you regain restful sleep, which in turn helps all parts of your body function better. Quality sleep plays a role in many important bodily functions, including immunity, cognitive abilities and weight management. In fact, some sleep disorders, like sleep apnea or obstructive sleep apnea, can be especially destructive to your health due to the obstruction of air during sleep. By addressing serious conditions like these, you can improve your overall quality of life. After receiving treatment, patients tend to have more energy during the day, and enjoy an improved mood, stamina and appetite.
