The 12-month program promotes confidence and excellence in care through evidence-based learning and work experiences which foster critical thinking and professional growth with an assigned mentor. The basis of the program is to implement evidence-based practices to ease nurses from the classroom setting and acclimate to the real-world medical field to promote quality, safety and reduce turnover rates.
More than 500 nurse residents have participated since its inception in January 2016. The program is open to all graduating registered nurses, or any registered nurse with less than one year of experience in an acute-care setting, hired by Ochsner Lafayette General Medical Center with licensing from an accredited school. Fall cohorts begin in August, and Spring cohorts begin in March. Ochsner University Hospital & Clinics will be initiating its first cohort Fall 2023.

"The nurse residency program provided by Ochsner has helped me bridge from a nursing student to practicing in a clinical profession. The program offered resources specific to Ochsner policies/procedures as well as self-care. I felt more confident and prepared throughout my orientation because I felt supported by my leaders, had 24/7 access to my mentors, and had peer support from other new grad nurses I met in the program. The program kept me engaged because unlike traditional classroom education, I participated in fun, hands-on activities and open discussions with my cohort. I have noticed an improvement in my clinical decision-making, time management and professional development skills. Going forward in my first year as a nurse, I keep in touch with my mentors, as well as my leaders who are continuously supporting me and my nursing career."
