Breast Cancer FAQs

  • What age should I start screening for breast cancer? All women should have an individualized breast risk assessment by age 30 with their physician. For women at average risk of breast cancer, they should begin annual mammography screening at age 40.
  • Are there symptoms or signs of breast cancer? Most types of breast cancers don't come with symptoms and are only detected on screening mammograms, which is why yearly mammograms are so important. When symptoms do appear, they can include swelling of all or part of a breast, skin irritation or dimpling, breast or nipple pain, nipple retraction, redness or thickening of the nipple or breast skin and nipple discharge.
