The clinical team at the Slidell Memorial Hospital Heart Center achieved a groundbreaking milestone in February 2024 by successfully implanting a device in a patient’s heart to reduce stroke risk from atrial fibrillation (AFib). This achievement marked the first implantation of the WATCHMAN FLX™ Pro Left Atrial Appendage Closure (LAAC) Device in Louisiana. The procedure was performed by Rami Kafa, MD, an interventional cardiologist at Ochsner Health.
Slidell Memorial Hospital East, a partner of Ochsner Health, was named “High Performing” by U.S. News & World Report in 2024–2025 for Kidney Failure and Pneumonia.
A first-in-the-region family medicine residency program welcomed its inaugural resident class of six doctors. The St. Tammany Health System/Ochsner Family Medicine Residency Program is training physicians in this important specialty who are uniquely qualified to treat most ailments and provide comprehensive healthcare for people of all ages. Lisa Casey, MD, is the program director for this new ACGME-accredited residency program.
Ochsner and Slidell Memorial Hospital presented Girl Talk, offering insights for preteen and teen girls. Tracy Carter, MD, and Taylor Hilton, MD, talked to attendees about physical, social and emotional changes, and ways to take care of their bodies during this time.
Teaching local kids about important health and safety topics, Ochsner and Slidell Memorial Hospital, in partnership with St. Tammany Fire District No. 1, offered the “Fit as a Firefighter” five-day summer camp for approximately 100 kids ages 7 to 12. The week was filled with five days of fun, games, education, healthy eating and cooking classes. Community leaders, subject matter experts and representatives from the New Orleans Saints and Pelicans participated in fun and educational activities with the children who attended.
Showing their commitment to serving their community, Ochsner volunteers helped build houses with Hancock County Habitat for Humanity during the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service.
Ochsner volunteers attended the Excel by 5 Children’s Health Fair, with 70 people in attendance.
