Meet Our Breast Surgery TeamOver time, many women notice changes in their breasts, like sagging or a loss of volume. A breast lift, or mastopexy, can raise and reshape the breasts for a more youthful look. For added fullness, breast augmentation with implants or fat grafting can create natural-looking volume and symmetry. These procedures can also be combined for those wanting both a lift and increased volume. Our team offers a range of techniques, including advanced options like a mesh internal brassiere, to achieve the best results.
Breast reduction surgery can help relieve the physical and emotional challenges of having large breasts. This procedure eases discomfort from back, neck and shoulder pain while making daily activities more manageable. At Ochsner, we create personalized care plans tailored to your needs and goals. By reshaping and resizing the breasts, breast reduction surgery improves comfort and enhances overall quality of life.
Breast reconstruction surgery restores the shape and appearance of the breast after a mastectomy or loss of breast tissue. At Ochsner MD Anderson Cancer Center, our plastic and reconstructive surgeons use the latest techniques to provide advanced care. We’ll work with you to choose the best reconstruction option, supporting you every step of the way in your breast cancer journey.
On average, breast implants last 10 to 20 years. Silicone implants require regular screenings such as ultrasounds or MRIs starting five years after surgery, per FDA guidelines, to check for rupture. Some doctors suggest replacing silicone implants electively before they rupture. Saline implants don’t require elective replacement because ruptures are visible as the implant deflates.
Fat grafting involves removing fat from areas like the thighs, belly, or buttocks using liposuction. The fat is processed into a liquid and then injected around the reconstructed breast to increase volume, improve shape, or smooth the transition between the breast and chest wall.
A reconstructed nipple is made by lifting small flaps of tissue from the reconstructed breast and stitching them together to form a projection that mimics a real nipple. Later, a tattoo can be added over the reconstructed nipple to recreate the color of the nipple and areola. Some patients opt for tattoos alone, as they can provide a three-dimensional appearance.
A tissue expander is a saline implant with a port, which can be accessed using a needle to adjust its volume. This allows the expander to be placed at a smaller volume during surgery and gradually inflated in the office. Tissue expanders are temporary and are usually replaced within several months to a year, depending on the patient’s treatment plan for breast cancer. Breast implants, on the other hand, are softer, more comfortable, and designed to remain in place for many years.
