Child and Adult Hip Preservation

The Ochsner Child and Adult Hip Preservation Center

The Ochsner Child and Adult Hip Preservation Center is the first program in the region focused on comprehensive care of children, adolescents, and young adults with complex hip problems. Our doctors are experts in both open and arthroscopic techniques to provide our patients with the best care. Our goal is to provide pain relief, allow an active lifestyle, and prevent early development of hip arthritis.

If you have hip pain, getting an accurate diagnosis is essential but can often be difficult. Here at Ochsner, we have the expertise to provide an accurate diagnosis and treatment options for your hip pain. We will work with you to develop a personalized treatment plan based on your history, exam, imaging, and your individual goals.

Hip preservation surgery optimizes the shape of the hip joint to improve pain and to delay or prevent the development of arthritis and the need for total hip arthroplasty. Hip problems that can lead to pain and early arthritis include dysplasia (such as from developmental dysplasia of the hip) and impingement (such as from femoroacetabular impingement). Other causes of early arthritis include sequelae of certain pediatric hip disorders such as Legg-Calve-Perthes disease and slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE).

The treatment for these disorders often involves complex surgical procedures that require specialized training and expertise. Some of these procedures include:

  • Periacetabular osteotomy (reorienting the acetabulum or socket of the hip joint to improve the coverage of the femoral head or ball
  • Surgical dislocation of the hip to reshape the femoral head to improve its fit within the acetabulum
  • Proximal femur osteotomy to improve the alignment of the femur or the fit of the femoral head within the acetabulum
  • Labral repair or reconstruction

  • Hip dysplasia
  • Hip instability
  • Femoroacetabular impingement
  • Legg-Calve-Perthes disease
  • Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE)
  • Femoral and pelvic anteversion/retroversion
  • Sports-related injuries
  • Labral tears
  • Complex hip deformities (due to skeletal dysplasias, trauma, proximal femoral focal deficiency, fibrous dysplasia, etc)
  • Avascular necrosis

  • Periacetabular osteotomy
  • Pelvic and femoral osteotomies
  • Surgical dislocation of the hip
  • Hip arthroscopy
  • Labral repair and reconstruction
