An extended care hospital, also known as a long-term acute care hospital (LTACH), provides specialized medical care for patients who are critically ill or have complex medical conditions requiring extended hospital stays, usually 20 to 30 days.

Unlike nursing homes or rehab centers, extended care hospitals provide 24/7 physician oversight, advanced technology, and hospital-level care for medically complex patients.

Patients who need ongoing hospital-level care after a serious illness, surgery, or trauma, such as those on ventilators, receiving dialysis, or needing complex wound care may be eligible. Admission is determined by physician referral and insurance approval.

Care is provided for patients with conditions including respiratory failure, cardiovascular and neurological disorders, severe infections, trauma, post-surgical complications and complex wounds.
