Our eye exam includes tests for:

  • Cataracts: Clouding of the lens.
  • Corneal diseases: Conditions that impact the outer layer of the eye.
  • Diabetic retinopathy: Diabetes-related damage to the eye’s blood vessels
  • External eye disease: Conditions, such as dry eye, pink eye and allergies, that affect the surface of the eye.
  • Glaucoma: Condition that develops when high eye pressure damages the optic nerve, leading to vision loss.
  • Intraocular tumors: Tumors that begin in the center layer of the eye.
  • Orbital diseases: Conditions that impact the eye socket.
  • Tear function: When eyes produce the right amount and quality of tears to keep eyes healthy.

FAQs

The American Optometric Association recommends that children get eye exams at 6 to 12 months and at least once between ages 3 and 5. Children should also receive eye exams before first grade and then annually. Adults with an average risk for vision issues should receive eye exams at least every two years from ages 18 to 64 and then annually after that. Adults at high risk should have eye exams at least annually.

During an eye exam, an optometrist or ophthalmologist will perform tests to find out how well you see and examine your eyes for signs of disease. In addition to determining if you need glasses or contacts — or if you need your prescription updated — the optometrist or ophthalmologist may perform screenings for conditions like glaucoma and cataracts.

Your prescription for glasses or contacts could change every year or two, which is why regular eye exams are so important. If your prescription needs to change, your optometrist will recommend a new prescription and you will need to get new lenses. It would be best to replace your contact lenses monthly, weekly or daily based on the type you use and the manufacturer’s recommendations.

Kids mature at different ages, and parents and caregivers must determine when their child is ready for the responsibility. Eye care providers usually recommend contacts for children 13 and older, but studies have shown that children as young as eight can safely use soft contacts.

An optician is a technician who fits glasses and contact lenses. An optometrist can perform an eye exam and diagnose and treat some conditions of the eyes. An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor who can diagnose eye conditions and provide medical or surgical treatment.

Low vision means someone's eyesight isn't as good as it needs to be for everyday things. When someone has low vision, they might get a special check-up to find tools that can help them see better.

After performing a check-up for low vision, we have several tools that can help patients see better. These tools can be strong glasses, things that make objects look bigger, tiny telescopes, special lenses, sunglasses that help with glare, and even gadgets that turn words on a page into something you can see on a screen. This kind of check-up is really useful for people dealing with eye problems like macular degeneration, glaucoma, issues caused by diabetes in the eyes, retinitis pigmentosa, and eye conditions they were born with. After this check-up, patients with low vision find they can read again and do everyday things much easier.
