Is arthritis or an injury keeping you off the golf course or from exercising in the park like you used to? Are you a competitive athlete who wants to finish the season safely and painlessly? Are you looking to avoid orthopedic surgery altogether or to bridge the pain until surgery? With leading-edge orthobiologics, including Stem Cell Injection Therapies and Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Injections, arthritis patients and athletes of all ages are able to get back to their active lifestyles quickly and safely.
Advanced Injection Therapy builds upon your body’s own abilities to heal itself. Your doctor uses natural materials from your blood or bone marrow to alleviate pain and stimulate healing.
Regenerative medicine is an exciting alternative to steroid shots, joint replacements and other orthopedic surgeries. And because orthobiologics are made from natural substances from your own body, they have an excellent safety profile and side effects are not common.
Why Ochsner for Orthobiologics?
Orthobiologics is a relatively new breakthrough in natural healing. The first stem cell injections in Louisiana using the advanced Arthrex Angel system were done right here at Ochsner by Dr. Andrew Gottschalk. Today we go beyond traditional orthopedics by offering the most advanced therapies available.
At Ochsner, we believe that good medicine is collaborative. We work with referring primary care physicians, orthopedic surgeons, rheumatologists, sports medicine specialists and other team members to customize a treatment plan that’s right for you.
Orthopedic conditions we treat with stem cells include:
- Arthritis and Degenerative Joints
- Ligament and Tendon Tears
- Rotator Cuff Tears
- Plantar Fasciitis
- Sprains and Strains
- And many others
Orthopedic conditions we treat with PRP therapy include:
- Ligament and Joint Sprains
- Muscle Strains
- Joint Pain
- Muscle Fibrosis
- Partial Rotator Cuff Tears
- Plantar Fasciitis
- And many others
What to Expect
For the Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Treatment, we start by simply drawing blood. For the Stem Cell Treatment, we extract bone marrow from the back of your pelvis with a needle in a procedure that requires no general anesthesia.
The blood or the bone marrow is then put into a centrifuge, where we can remove a concentrated volume of the healing solution. Then, using ultrasound guidance, your doctor injects the solution into the exact part of the body requiring healing. The whole process is done in one visit in an outpatient setting and takes between 60 and 90 minutes.
Who Should Consider Orthobiologics?
- Patients who are not getting satisfactory results from their current treatment plan
- Athletes with sprains or strains who are trying to finish a season and want to keep playing safely
- Anyone who would like to avoid surgery or are currently not healthy enough to have surgery
Advanced injection therapies are much safer than surgery, relatively pain free and can be incredibly effective. They have the potential to improve quality of life for so many people.
