Ochsner Health is a system that delivers health to the people of Louisiana, Mississippi and the Gulf South with a mission to Serve, Heal, Lead, Educate and Innovate.
Xavier University of Louisiana and Ochsner Health are teaming up to open a new medical school, the Xavier Ochsner College of Medicine. This historic school will be the only HBCU medical school in the Gulf South when it opens. Right now, there are only four other medical schools at historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) across the United States. Together, Xavier and Ochsner aim to train more doctors, especially more diverse doctors, to make sure everyone in our communities gets the care they deserve.
The Gulf South needs more doctors, especially physicians from diverse backgrounds. Research shows that there aren’t enough doctors graduating from medical schools in the U.S. This shortage is especially a problem in Louisiana. Research also shows that representation in medicine matters for making sure more people get and stay well.
Xavier and Ochsner have been working together since the early 1980s. Through our partnership, Ochsner and Xavier have made advances in healthcare equity through several programs, including a program for physician assistants that has already graduated 70 students.
By creating this new medical school, Xavier and Ochsner are taking a big step toward making healthcare better for all the communities we serve. Together, we are training doctors who care deeply about their patients and understand the importance of diversity and high-quality medicine.
