Different Journeys, Shared Purpose: Kim and Eileen’s Pathways to Imaging

Kim Billiot and Eileen Romero, both CT technologists at Ochsner Baptist, share inspiring stories of resilience, dedication, and purpose in their journeys toward careers in imaging. Kim, who began her connection with Ochsner during her clinical rotations, overcame the challenges of radiologic education to pursue her passion for patient care and professional growth. Eileen’s path took an unexpected turn when a family health crisis led her to pivot from nursing to imaging, a career that has since spanned over three decades and positioned her as a mentor and leader. Their unique experiences underscore a shared commitment to compassionate, high-quality care, while highlighting Ochsner Health's role in empowering their growth and fostering an environment where purpose-driven professionals thrive.

For patients, imaging is a crucial milestone, an essential step toward gaining clarity and answers along their medical journey. For imaging professionals, however, it begins with a decision, a defining choice to dedicate themselves to a career that combines advanced technology with compassionate care. At Ochsner Health, we’ve seen how these decisions shape not just careers, but lives. Today, we highlight the unique journeys of Kim and Eileen, two team members whose inspiring choices to pursue imaging reflect the resilience, determination and purpose that define this rewarding field.

Meet Kim

For the past two years, Kim has served as a CT technologist at Ochsner Baptist in New Orleans, Louisiana. Her connection to Ochsner Health began during her clinical rotations while earning her Bachelor of Science in radiologic technology at the University of Holy Cross. Impressed by her commitment and skill, Ochsner offered her a full-time position after graduation, a moment Kim describes as deeply meaningful.

“Ochsner Baptist was actually my favorite clinic site, so I was extremely grateful for that opportunity,” Kim shared.

Kim’s decision to pursue imaging was clear early on, but her educational path wasn’t without challenges. Reflecting on the demands of radiologic technology programs, Kim acknowledges the resilience required to succeed. She understands that many students may find themselves choosing between pursuing imaging long-term and having more free time in the short term.

“X-ray school is not a walk in the park,” Kim advised. “It is very tough, but it will reward you in the long run. There is a light at the end of the tunnel, and when you do start working full-time, it is a big difference from when you are in school. You gain a lot of that time back once you see it through. I advise you to stick it out and see what’s in your path.”

Today, Kim’s favorite moments come from her interactions with both patients and colleagues. She values the opportunity to make a positive impact, ensuring that each patient feels cared for and comfortable while undergoing their scans. These connections fuel her passion for growth within her role.

“I hope to continue the journey I'm on,” Kim expressed. “I hope to put a good bit of experience behind me so that I can be a better tech. Down the line, I hope to go into a management position, perhaps in five to ten years. Right now, I’m where I need to be. I’m still learning, I’m still gathering knowledge, so for the next few years, that’s what I’m going to continue to do.”

Kim’s story is a testament to the persistence and rewards of following your passion with determination.

Meet Eileen

Eileen Romero, also a CT technologist at Ochsner Baptist, shares a unique and inspiring story highlighting how life’s unexpected turns can lead to fulfilling destinations. A New Orleans native, Eileen initially planned to become a nurse, excelling in her nursing prerequisites at Southeastern University. But when her mother fell critically ill and needed a liver transplant, Eileen made the selfless decision to put her education on hold and move to Dallas to support her through surgery and recovery.

“I was ready to start my clinicals when my mom became ill and needed to have a liver transplant,” Eileen recalled. “I withdrew from the nursing program to go to Dallas with her and stay with her.”

After a year of caregiving and healing, Eileen returned to Southeastern, only to face an unexpected challenge: She was told she would need to wait a semester before resuming her clinicals. Her path took a decisive turn when she learned, on short notice, that an X-ray program was enrolling.

“Somehow, I heard that the x-ray program was starting the next day,” Eileen explained. “I hurried up, got an application filled out, got my reference letters and applied the next day. It was competitive to get admitted, but I did.”

Eileen’s swift decision not only reshaped her career but also solidified her calling. Now, over thirty years later, she has become both a leader and a mentor within her department at Ochsner Baptist, guiding others while staying deeply committed to her field.

“I switched into that program, and I have been in imaging ever since,” Eileen shared. “I can say now, in retrospect, that it was the absolute best thing that could’ve happened to me.”

Shared Purpose, Unique Journeys

Kim and Eileen’s stories remind us that every individual’s path is distinct, shaped by challenges, opportunities and personal choices. Yet, a common thread unites them—their unwavering pursuit of purpose and their dedication to delivering compassionate, high-quality care.
