A Career Path with Endless Possibilities

Melissa’s journey in imaging began when she enrolled into the Ochsner Training Program. Initially drawn to the field by a desire to help others, she found herself fascinated by the fast-paced world of CT. “I didn't even realize CT was a profession until I got into the X-ray program. My initial goal was to work in ultrasound, particularly with neonates. But as the program exposed me to all the different modalities, I fell in love with CT. The fast-paced environment, the evolving technology, and the dynamic aspects of the field really drew me in.” With determination and a strong work ethic, fueled by her passion to help others, Melissa advanced from a student tech assistant role to her current position as a CT Specialist.

Her growth wasn’t just a matter of moving up the ladder; it was a journey of learning, development, and discovery. “Ochsner provided me with the tools and resources to excel,” she says. “From continuing education opportunities to hands-on training, I’ve always felt supported in my career.”

One of the reasons Melissa has stayed with Ochsner for so long is the balance she’s found between the excitement of change and the comfort of consistency. “I think that's part of the reason I've been here for so long—I enjoy change and that fast pace, but I also appreciate some consistency. It's not like I'm doing the same thing over and over. Our team is wonderful; we have some really great people. It’s kind of like a family. Each day will bring a set of challenges, and each team member works together to improve our patient’s experience.

For Melissa, working in imaging is about more than just taking pictures—it’s about being a part of a patient’s journey to better health and finding personal fulfillment. “Every day, I have the opportunity to make a difference,” she says. “Whether it’s providing a clear scan that helps a doctor make an accurate diagnosis or simply offering reassurance to a nervous patient, I know my work matters.”

Melissa finds fulfillment in her work as a CT Specialist. “Working in CT, our scans are typically quick, taking just 5 to 20 minutes. But even in that short time, I've seen the impact we can make. I had a cancer patient who came in for regular follow-up scans every three to six months. Each time, I was the one who scanned him, and in those brief moments, we formed a connection. We'd talk about our families and get to know each other a little better. Even though it was a difficult time in his life, I think it meant something to him to know that someone cared and wanted to see him get better.”

Beyond her professional role, Melissa’s purpose is deeply rooted in her family. “My kids are my biggest motivation,” she shares. “Knowing that I’m setting an example for them by doing work that I’m passionate about and that helps others is incredibly rewarding.”

This sense of purpose, both at work and at home, drives Melissa to continue growing in her field. “I love what I do because it allows me to combine my passion for patient care with my interest in technology,” she adds. “It’s rewarding to know that I’m playing a role in helping people on their health journeys while also showing my kids the importance of doing what you love. I have to be there because my patients expect me to be there, and I genuinely care about them. My purpose in coming to work every day is for those patients, hoping that each one has the outcome they're hoping for.”
