Finding Purpose and Community: Eric's Path to Respiratory Therapy

When Eric and his wife moved to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, they weren’t sure what to expect. Originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Eric had spent six years in the military, stationed in Virginia. But as he transitioned to civilian life, they sought a fresh start in a place that felt right for their growing family.

“I’m from Pittsburgh, and my wife is from Miami, so Virginia never really felt like home,” Eric reflects. “My wife’s sister and her husband had recently relocated to Louisiana. We visited a few times and just fell in love with the area.”

The decision to move, though filled with uncertainty, led Eric to a career and community that would profoundly shape his life.

Discovering Respiratory Therapy

Like many healthcare professionals, Eric didn’t initially plan on becoming a respiratory therapist. His introduction to the field came through his military service, where he trained as a cardiopulmonary technician.

“To be honest, I didn’t even know what respiratory therapy was at first,” he admitted. “We actually call it a cardiopulmonary tech in the military, so I researched the profession and tried to piece it together from there. But I knew a medical career would always be in demand, so I decided to go for it.”

What started as a cautious decision quickly turned into a passion. After six years in the military and nearly two years with Ochsner Health, Eric has fully embraced his role in respiratory care, though the transition into civilian healthcare came with learning opportunities.

“Adjusting to the critical care side of the job was one of the biggest challenges,” he shares. “I felt comfortable with clinical and diagnostic processes, but the complex care management and the importance of what we do in critical care, really opened my eyes.”

The People Who Make the Difference

Starting over in an inpatient hospital setting could have been overwhelming, yet Ochsner’s support made all the difference for Eric.

“When I first started, I never felt alone,” he recalls. “The orientation process was thorough. No matter what situation I faced, I knew someone was a call away. That kind of support builds the confidence you need to grow into your role.”

Beyond the training, Eric credits the camaraderie with his team as one of the most rewarding parts of his job.

“What I love most about working here is the people,” he says. “Work is work, but it’s the relationships that make those long shifts meaningful. We know each other’s stories and families, and that connection makes tough days easier.”

Balancing Work and Family

For Eric, respiratory therapy is more than a job; it’s a career that allows him to be present for the moments that matter most.

“I wake up at 5:30, commute from Gonzales, work a 12-hour shift, and then drive home,” he said. “But the moment I walk through the door, I go straight into Dad mode. I’ve got two beautiful little girls, and as soon as I get home, it’s tea parties, dolls, cooking dinner, and time with my family.”

The work-life balance his career offers is something he deeply values.

“You work three days a week, and then you still have time to spend with your family,” he said. “That’s huge for me. I get to provide for them and still be there for them.”

Looking Ahead

Eric’s commitment to personal and professional growth keeps him motivated. With a background in business administration, he aims to take on a leadership role within respiratory care.

“In the next three to five years, I want to solidify my experience as a respiratory therapist and get to a point where people in the department turn to me for guidance,” he said. “I’ve always been interested in leadership and management, so if the opportunity arises, I’d love to step into that role.”

Advice for Future Respiratory Therapists

For those considering a career in respiratory therapy, Eric offers simple but impactful advice.

“It’s an incredibly fulfilling career. You get to work in diverse areas, from inpatient floors to critical care. The pace fits what works best for you, and the time spent with patients is meaningful. But truly, finding the right team makes all the difference.”

Eric also highlights the importance of balance.

“If work-life balance matters to you, this career offers it. You get to make a difference every day while still having time for your family. For me, it was exactly what I needed.”

A Place to Grow

Reflecting on his own path, Eric is confident he made the right decision.

“If you’re looking for a place to grow, to gain experience without burning out, Ochsner is that place,” he said. “I had people guiding me, supporting me, and making sure I felt confident.”

Eric’s story is one of perseverance, growth, and finding where he truly belongs. At Ochsner, he’s discovered more than just a career; he’s found a home, a team, and a future filled with purpose.
