From Recruiter to Radiology: Shelby’s Second Career Starts with Ochsner Scholars

Shelby Garvey knows what it’s like to be on both sides of the hiring table. Before she donned scrubs and began a career in imaging at Ochsner Medial Center - Kenner, she spent years working in human resources and talent acquisition.

Shelby dedicated her career to recruiting healthcare professionals, working firsthand to address the urgent need for qualified workers in the field. But what she didn’t foresee was that one day, she’d be the one stepping into those very roles she once helped fill.

Thanks to the Ochsner Scholars program, Shelby is proof that it’s never too late to pivot into a purpose-driven career in healthcare. With support at every step, she’s now building a future centered on meaningful connections and compassionate care.

“This is a second career for me. I realized I didn’t want to sit behind a desk anymore. I wanted something more physical, something more fulfilling, and imaging was it.”

Why Ochsner Scholars?

The Ochsner Scholars program is designed for students who are passionate about pursuing a nursing or allied health degree. By committing to serve at Ochsner Health after graduation, eligible participants receive financial assistance for tuition, access to expert mentorship, and hands-on learning experiences that set them up for long-term success.

For Shelby, the decision to join the program was clear.

“I already worked for Ochsner, and when they launched the Scholars program, I said, ‘Absolutely.’ Everyone needs financial help. And job security? Even better. Those were the three big draws—working at Ochsner, tuition support and the guarantee of a job when I finish.”

From hospitality to healthcare

Shelby’s path to radiology took several unexpected turns. She began her career in the hospitality industry and later moved into HR. The pandemic, however, gave her a new perspective on career fulfillment. While working on the new employee onboarding team at another health system, Shelby’s curiosity about imaging grew.

“You’re not pigeonholed into one modality. There are so many different things you can learn. Imaging is always evolving. I enjoy the direct patient care, the teamwork that is involved and that you also play a key role in diagnosis. A lot of patients come see us first for imaging that will help establish a treatment plan, and I think that’s fascinating.”

Three years ago, Shelby joined Ochsner’s Talent Acquisition team, recruiting for clinics, operating rooms, and imaging departments across the South Shore region. That’s where she first witnessed both the growing demand and the opportunities within radiology. Eventually, she decided to make the leap herself.

“I just thought, ‘What are you waiting on?’ I don’t have anything holding me back. I know my family will support my decision, and Ochsner is helping cover tuition. It was time.”

Lessons learned, values reinforced

Now working as an imaging assistant and studying in Delgado’s Radiologic Technology program, Shelby reflects on the lessons she’s learned, particularly the importance of patient advocacy.

“People think advocacy is just for nurses, but as an imaging tech, you’re still your patient’s number one advocate. You’re making sure the right diagnostic steps are taken, walking them through the process, and helping them feel seen and supported.”

Shelby’s belief in the program runs deep, as does her connection to Ochsner’s legacy. Her twin sister is a PACU nurse at Ochsner Medical Center – New Orleans, and her mother, a retired RN, dedicated 49 years to Ochsner Baptist.

“I’m just so happy. I have the support and encouragement of my family. I have Ochsner’s support. I have my school’s support, and my managers here at Ochsner Kenner are willing to work with me and make sure that I’m successful.”

Her advice? “Just do it.”

“It is scary, but it will pay off in the long run. If you’re thinking about applying to Ochsner Scholars, stop overthinking it. Just do it. This is your sign.”

What’s next for Shelby? She’s focused on finishing her program and keeping her options open for growth within Ochsner.

“A year from now, I’ll be finishing my program, and who knows what will come next. But I’ll definitely still be with Ochsner. The opportunities here are endless.”
