The work happening inside the Ochsner patient flow center is more complex and impactful than most people realize. Serving as the central hub for patient transfers across the Ochsner Health system, the center ensures that every patient reaches the right facility, for the right care, as safely and quickly as possible.
Leading this coordinated effort is Domonique P., operations and nursing director of the patient flow center. She oversees a team that supports Ochsner facilities, partner hospitals and external sites seeking access to Ochsner’s specialized care network.
Moving a patient between facilities involves far more than arranging transportation. It requires precise communication, real‑time decision‑making and highly skilled clinical insight. Patient flow center nurses and coordinators manage bed assignments, clinical assessments, transport logistics and dozens of details that must align perfectly for a safe transition.
“Moving a patient from one hospital to the other isn’t just about transportation,” Domonique said. “It’s about coordination, communication and care. Putting those pieces together to paint the big masterpiece of getting patients the care they need at the right time—it’s rewarding, fun and exciting.”
Domonique takes great pride in the team that brings the patient flow center’s mission to life.
“What I love most about this team is their incredible spirit and drive,” Domonique says. “They are incredibly motivated. They come to work every day and put their best foot forward.”
In the patient flow center, innovation shapes the team’s culture, and their resilience stands out.
“They’re innovative thinkers who constantly find creative solutions to the complex challenges that we face in this space,” Domonique explains. “They’re able to adapt and thrive no matter what comes their way. And above all, we work hard and we have fun along the way.”
The patient flow center thrives on fast‑paced and complex coordination, and the right nurse makes all the difference.
“We’re looking for experienced nurses, specifically those with emergency department experience, given the strong triage skills that are developed,” Domonique explained.
Success in this role requires a blend of clinical expertise, adaptability, quick thinking and strong communication.
“The ideal candidate is going to be a clear and effective communicator, resourceful and an exceptional problem solver,” Domonique said. “They should be a collaborator, a true team player and one who contributes positively to the incredible culture we’ve built in this space.”
This is a dynamic, collaborative environment that offers the chance to make a meaningful impact behind the scenes of patient care.
“If you thrive on collaboration, stay calm under pressure and love the idea of being the person who helps connect patients to the care they need,” Domonique shares, “you’ll not only succeed here, but you’re going to love it here.”
