When the medical surgical telemetry unit at Ochsner Slidell Memorial Hospital East moved into its new home in the 1200 Wing of Slidell Memorial Hospital Main, one thing stayed the same: the heart of the team. The move was a big change, but it brought the team closer together than ever. For Nurse Manager Mary W., the transition was emotional but ultimately affirming.
“It was a very hard time because a lot of us felt like we were losing our family back at east campus. But I love how the team just rallied around each other. My supervisors, the charge nurse supervisors and leaders provided so much support and encouragement.”
Mary has been with Slidell Memorial for 13 years, and her connection to the team runs deep. “We are such a family-oriented team,” she said. “We celebrate our wins. We pray for each other in our losses. We help pick each other up when we're feeling down.”
That spirit of support and connection isn’t just words. It is how the team shows up for each other every day, and it is what keeps nurses like Jazmine B. and Caroline G. not only grounded but growing.
Jazmine B. came to Slidell Memorial ready to grow, and the support she found here helped her flourish into a confident charge nurse.
Jazmine began her journey at Slidell Memorial as an in-house agency nurse. After switching to the day shift, she found herself working under Mary’s leadership and quickly realized she had found something special.
“We weren’t just like a number; we were actually people,” Jazmine said. “I felt like Ms. Mary saw me and saw my potential to be more and be in a leadership role. I really appreciated that.”
Now a charge nurse, Jazmine has grown both clinically and personally. “Being in a leadership role has helped me become more confident in myself and my skills,” she said. “And the teamwork here is incredible. We know about each other’s families, and that helps us work better together.”
She has also been impressed by how leadership shows up in real ways. “Some of the house supervisors will come on the floor, help start IVs and helped take care of the patients. That really showed they care.”
For new graduate Caroline G., the med tele unit has been a place of transformation. A former teacher, Caroline made the leap to nursing with encouragement from her mom, who was also a nurse.
What stood out right away was the welcome she received during her interview. “What stuck out to me about this unit specifically was Mary, but also the team that I walked into on that interview day. Everyone was so welcoming and so helpful with each other, and Mary just made me feel super welcomed.”
That support continued once she started. “I’m so thankful for the team that I have because they really have helped me through that transition of being a new grad. It is challenging, but it’s also a lot of fun, especially when you have a really awesome team like I do.”
Caroline also appreciates Mary’s encouragement to keep growing. “She made me feel like if I were to move on eventually, that’s OK because she wants me to professionally develop at some point as well. So even if this is just a stepping stone for me, she makes me feel important.”
Caroline chose med tele for its fast-paced environment and the opportunity to build a strong clinical foundation. Looking ahead, she hopes to pursue a cardiac-focused role, perhaps in the cath lab or cardiac rehab. “I’ve always loved the cardiac theme of things,” she said. “And med tele is a great foundation for that.” Still, she’s in no rush to leave. “The more I work with this team, the more I understand why people stay. It’s the team, the flexibility, and the support.”
Whether you're a seasoned nurse or just starting your journey, the med tele unit at Ochsner Slidell Memorial offers more than just a job. It offers a place to grow, to be seen and to be supported. From Mary’s leadership to the camaraderie among staff, this unit is built on trust, compassion and a shared commitment to care.
