Interview tips and tricks for healthcare professionals

In this blog, Ochsner career outreach specialists offer a few tips and tricks to help you feel confident and prepared for your next big career opportunity.

What should I expect in an interview?

Every interview will begin with: “Tell me about yourself and why you are interested in this role.” Come prepared with an answer! Focus on past, present and future for this answer.

Other questions to consider include:

  • What have you done that qualifies you for this position?
  • What are you looking for in this role?
  • How are you a good fit for this role and organization?
  • Where do you see yourself in the future?

Focus on why this organization is a good fit for you. Be prepared for behavioral-based interview questions, where you will be asked to describe a time that you’ve been in a particular situation and how you handled it.

What interview tips can you give specifically to clinical students?

Be prepared to talk about your clinical experiences. Don’t just list the areas you have direct experience in; Be prepared to talk about what you learned there. Discuss topics such as time management, conflict resolution, patient prioritization, etc. I recommend preparing specific examples of these experiences and being prepared to discuss these during the interview.

- Heather M., MSN Ed, Associate Program Manager

Don’t forget about your transferable skills! If you don’t have any clinical work experiences to speak to, try to think creatively about jobs you’ve had in the nonclinical setting where you worked in a fast-paced environment, exceeded customers’ expectations, communicated with other team members, and more!

What kind of preparation should you do before your interview?

Research the mission, vision and values of the organization. Be engaged and ask questions! This is the time to not only be interviewed, but to ensure the unit/dept is a great fit for you too!

- Ashley D., Senior Talent Acquisition Recruiter

Plan to arrive early for the interview. Know how to speak to your strengths and weaknesses. Discuss your areas of improvement during your interview. It’s ok to admit where you can grow.

What materials should I prepare for my interview?

Polish up your resume and bring any other requested materials, organized for easy reading. I recommend creating a robust LinkedIn, making connections and asking for referrals before your interview. Your interviewer might look you up on LinkedIn to gather talking points. Give them some good ones! I also recommend looking up the organization on social media pages like Facebook or Instagram. This is a great way to get a sense of corporate culture, and it’s a great opportunity for you to gather questions and talking points as well.

How can I practice for job interviews?

A great way to prepare for interviews is to look up career events that offer mock-interviews and free headshots. Ochsner Health frequently offers a regional Student Expo for students and new graduates to schedule mock-interviews to practice and receive feedback from recruitment professionals. It’s a great way to practice! And free professional headshots will help you create a professional LinkedIn profile.
