Biography

Cuong “CJ” Bui, MD, a neurosurgeon and chair of neurosurgery at Ochsner Health, provides expert care for complex cranial and spinal disorders in adult and pediatric patients in New Orleans and Metairie, Louisiana. Known for treating challenging neurological conditions, Dr. Bui specializes in cranial disorders including brain tumors; hydrocephalus, including normal pressure hydrocephalus; Chiari malformations; epilepsy; trigeminal neuralgia; hematomas; cranial cysts; and other intracranial pathologies.

His spinal practice includes degenerative cervical and lumbar spine diseases, spinal tumors, trauma, infections, tethered cord, syrinx, cerebral palsy spasticity, spinal fractures and carpal tunnel syndrome.
For pediatric patients, Dr. Bui focuses on minimally invasive and endoscopic cranial procedures, complex hydrocephalus management, and treatment of congenital cranial and spinal conditions such as spinal dysraphism, tethered cord, craniovertebral junction abnormalities, myelomeningoceles (MMC), lipomyelomeningoceles, fatty filum, cervical instability from Down syndrome, and sports-related spinal injuries. His pediatric cranial expertise also includes oncology, craniofacial defects, Chiari malformations, seizure disorders, and congenital brain defects. Across all age groups, his approach emphasizes precision, functional preservation and long-term health.

In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Bui serves as chair of neurosurgery and program director of the Tulane-Ochsner Neurosurgery Residency Program, where he trains future neurosurgeons. He also contributes to multidisciplinary neuroscience care and strategic growth at Ochsner Neuroscience Institute.

A New Orleans native, Dr. Bui returned to Ochsner Health after completing his training. He earned his medical degree from Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine, completed a general surgery internship at the University of California, San Francisco, a neurosurgery residency at State University of New York Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, and a pediatric neurosurgery fellowship at Children’s Hospital of Alabama in Birmingham. He is committed to compassionate, patient-centered care, focusing on accurate diagnosis, surgical decision-making, and improving function and quality of life.
