John Bates, MD is a board-certified psychiatrist with Ochsner Health. Dr. Bates specializes in outpatient mental health care. He provides personalized treatment using medication management and evidence-based strategies to support individuals with a wide range of psychiatric conditions. His clinical interests include adult psychiatry, addiction medicine and the use of telepsychiatry to improve access to care.

Dr. Bates earned his medical degree from Oregon Health and Science University School of Medicine in Portland, where he also completed his psychiatric residency. Throughout his career, he has delivered psychiatric care in varied clinical environments, spanning residential treatment centers, inpatient hospitals and outpatient behavioral health programs across several states.

Certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, Dr. Bates is dedicated to advancing mental health care through innovation, collaboration, and patient-centered practice. Outside of medicine, he enjoys spiritual practice, spending time with family and friends, cooking, public speaking and boating.
