Biography

Lana Abusalem, MD, MS-GH, is an infectious diseases specialist at Ochsner Health who provides comprehensive care for adults with a wide range of infectious conditions. Her clinical expertise includes the management of bloodstream infections, device-related infections, respiratory infections, skin and soft tissue infections, bone and joint infections, urinary tract infections, Clostridioides difficile infections, sexually transmitted infections, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and travel-related illnesses. She also has extensive experience of caring for immunocompromised and transplant patients. Dr. Abusalem has expertise in antimicrobial stewardship, global health, and the treatment of multidrug-resistant organisms. Dr. Abusalem earned her Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Jordan in Amman, Jordan. She completed her Internal Medicine residency and served as Chief Resident at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock, Arkansas. She went on to complete fellowship training in Infectious Diseases at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina, a globally recognized academic institution known for developing the Duke criteria for diagnosing infective endocarditis. During her time at Duke, she also completed the Global Health Pathway through the Hubert-Yeargan Center for Global Health and earned a Master of Science in Global Health from the Duke Global Health Institute, with a focus on research methodology and implementation science. Dr. Abusalem is board-certified in both internal medicine and infectious diseases by the American Board of Internal Medicine. In addition to her clinical practice, Dr. Abusalem is actively involved in research and medical education. Her work has focused on the management of carbapenem-resistant organism infections in Sri Lanka and the use of telehealth in the United States to improve care delivery for individuals living with HIV. She has authored peer-reviewed publications and presented her research at national and international scientific meetings. Dr. Abusalem is committed to delivering compassionate, evidence-based care and values building strong partnerships with her patients. She takes the time to understand each patients concerns and goals while developing individualized, high-quality treatment plans within a collaborative care model. She joined Ochsner Health in 2026 and is currently accepting new patients and referrals. Outside of medicine, Dr. Abusalem enjoys photography, traveling, and exploring global cuisines. She is fluent in both English and Arabic.
