Biography

Dr. Matthew Giefer practices pediatric gastroenterology at Ochsner Health in New Orleans. Dr. Giefer received his medical degree with honors from Loyola University - Chicago in 2006. He went on to complete his residency in pediatrics at the University of Vermont and fellowships in pediatric gastroenterology and advanced endoscopy at the University of Washington. Dr. Giefer is an international expert in diagnosing and treating both common and rare gastrointestinal diseases. He has authored over 50 peer reviewed publications on pediatric gastrointestinal diseases. He co-established the Foundation for Childhood Pancreatitis and serves on other local and national boards. Dr. Giefer's research includes investigating the causes and treatments of pediatric pancreatitis as well as how to safely apply advanced endoscopic procedures in children. Dr. Giefer is board certified in general pediatrics and pediatric gastroenterology. He is an associate professor at LSU Health and The University of Queensland. He is an active member of the North American Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, the American Gastroenterological Association, and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. Dr. Giefer and his wife Kristin moved to Louisiana in 2019, with their two young girls so they could grow up in the midst of the amazing people and culture of the Gulf South.
