Important Changes to Louisiana Medicaid in 2027 – New Work Requirements
Starting January 1, 2027, some adult Louisiana Medicaid members will need to report work activities to keep their coverage. Most Louisiana Medicaid members will not have to report. If you are under age 19, over age 64, living with a disability or a serious medical condition, a full-time student, or caring for a child or someone with a disability, you likely will not have to report.
Prepare now for any changes:
- Make sure your contact information is up to date.
- Open and read all mail from Louisiana Medicaid.
- Respond on time if you are asked to report activities.

The experienced and knowledgeable staff at Ochsner will help you through the process of applying for Louisiana Medicaid to help pay for your unplanned medical expenses. Whether you visit the Emergency Department, clinic, or are admitted into the hospital, representatives are available who can evaluate your individual situation.
Louisiana’s Medicaid program provides medical coverage for qualified Louisiana residents in need. You may qualify if you are:
- Unable to pay for some or all of your medical bills
- Under age 19
- A parent with a child under age 19 in the household
- Pregnant
- Receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI) from the SSA
- 65 years of age or older
- Blind—Individuals who have corrected vision no better than 20/200
- Disabled—Individuals who meet SSA’s (Social Security Administration) disability criteria and have physical or mental impairments that prevent employment for a period of 12 consecutive months or that will result in death
- Needing treatment for breast or cervical cancer
At no cost to the patient, the Medical Cost Assistance Program will:
- Review all medical expenses to determine completeness of coverage
- Evaluate potential Medical Cost Assistance eligibility
- Assist, educate, inform, and represent each patient/applicant through the eligibility process
- Assist in securing documents for the patient/ applicant
- Perform intense application maintenance to insure accurate and timely eligibility decisions
