What is cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA)?

Cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) is a condition where a protein called amyloid-beta builds up in the small blood vessels of the brain over many years. This build-up can weaken the blood vessels, making them more likely to leak and cause tiny bleeds in the brain that often go unnoticed.

Over time, these small changes can impact memory and cognitive function. In some cases, a blood vessel may burst, leading to a larger bleed and more serious symptoms, like a stroke.

Here are some important things to know about CAA:

  • CAA is quite common as people get older; it’s not a rare condition.
  • CAA is one of the leading causes of non-traumatic brain bleeding in people over 60.
  • Over time, the changes caused by CAA can lead to cognitive problems. Sometimes, a single, larger bleed can suddenly impact memory and cognitive function. CAA is also closely linked to Alzheimer’s disease, and the two conditions often occur together.
  • Short episodes of neurological symptoms, often called “amyloid spells,” can be mistaken for other conditions like mini-strokes (TIAs), migraines, or seizures. This can delay the correct diagnosis, but with the right tools and expertise, CAA can be identified and managed effectively.

Joseph Tarsia, MD

Joseph Tarsia, MD is a board-certified vascular neurologist who directs the Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy (CAA) Clinic at the Ochsner Neuroscience Institute in New Orleans, Louisiana. He evaluates and treats patients with cerebral amyloid angiopathy, including CAA-related inflammation (CAA-ri), brain hemorrhage, convexal subarachnoid hemorrhage, amyloid-related imaging abnormalities (ARIA) or complications from anti-amyloid therapy, transient focal neurological episodes (also called amyloid spells) and the spectrum of vascular cognitive impairment. While CAA is the focus of his practice, Dr. Tarsia evaluates the full range of complex conditions affecting the brain's smallest blood vessels, including hypertensive brain bleeds and lacunar strokes, with microvascular brain health as the organizing focus of his clinical and research work. Working in close collaboration with Ochsner's cognitive and behavioral neurology team, he brings precision to diagnosis and a commitment to helping patients understand and navigate what it means.

James Rini, MD

James Rini, MD is a behavioral neurologist specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of memory and cognitive disorders at the Ochsner Neuroscience Institute in New Orleans, Louisiana. He works with patients experiencing changes in memory, language, behavior and problem-solving skills to identify the cause of their symptoms and create personalized treatment plans. Dr. Rini specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease, cerebral amyloid angiopathy, hereditary amyloidosis, mild cognitive impairment, frontotemporal dementia, Lewy body dementia, vascular dementia, aphasia, cognitive decline and other disorders affecting the brain and nervous system.
