The Ochsner Flight Care Team is dedicated to the safe and expeditious treatment and transport of critically ill or injured patients of all ages. Our team works diligently to ensure and deliver the highest quality out-of-hospital critical care. Ochsner Flight Care Team was established in 1984 and is a 24/7 Emergency/Critical Care Transport service. Our Flight Care Team has continuously serviced the needs of our patients, both medical and trauma of all ages, for the last 24 years.
Our around-the-clock Flight Care Communication Center is capable of coordinating and dispatching transport services for critically ill neonatal, pediatric, high-risk obstetric and all adult patients. These transports are conducted primarily by helicopter with an immediate response radius of 275 mile from Ochsner Medical Center New Orleans. Airplane and ground-based emergency transport services are also available. We are a bedside-to-bedside critical care service capable of transporting patients both nationally and internationally, as well as serving the emergency needs of the Gulf of Mexico offshore population.
Our Flight Team consists of highly skilled, specially trained Critical Care Registered Nurses. Every transport is staffed with two RNs, each with a minimum of three to five years Critical Care/Emergency Medical Care experience. The Flight Care Nurses hold certifications in Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP), as well as many other nationally recognized Critical Care certifications. Many of our nurses hold instructor status for the above mentioned certifications. Physicians and specialty staff are available to accompany the flight teams if needed.
In November 2007 Ochsner Flight Care became an important part in the development of the service end of the Ochsner Pediatric Hotline. The Ochsner Pediatric Hotline is a dedicated 24/7 service available to the Gulf South Region for the rapid transport and treatment of the ill or injured pediatric patient. When the call is received from the outlying hospitals and clinics, our Flight Care Communication Center rapidly connects the calling physician with an Ochsner Pediatric Intensive Care Physician. Together the physicians quickly develop a plan for the pediatric patient's treatment and transport to Ochsner Medical Center New Orleans.
The Ochsner Flight Care Communication Center is staffed 24 hours a day by highly skilled EMS trained Communication Specialist. Our Communication Specialists have many Flight Care responsibilities. They primarily arrange and coordinate the appropriate transportation mode according to the patients' medical needs. Other duties include staffing the Ochsner Pediatric Hotline, monitoring Ochsner Medical Center helipad for all helicopter traffic, and all other aspects of the transport process.
Ochsner Flight Care is licensed by the Department of Emergency Medical Authority of the states of Louisiana and Mississippi, including Jefferson Parish EMS and is an active member of the Association of Air Medical Services (AAMS).
