Home Health

There's no place like home. This is especially true if you've spent a prolonged period of time in the hospital recovering from an illness or injury. The therapeutic impact of being in surroundings you're comfortable with, with family and friends close by, can have a dramatic effect on your recovery.

As an affiliate of LHC Group, we have the technology and specially trained staff to help you regain your strength and independence. We also provide valuable guidance and support to your caregiver. In addition, your care is provided under the direct supervision of your physician.

At Ochsner Home Health, our patients and their families truly come first. We strive to not only assist our patients in attaining the quality of life they deserve, but also to work within the community in an effort to provide the educational tools and resources which can help families make an informed decision when the time to plan for the care of a loved one arrives.

The emergence of new medical treatments and technologies has made home health care a viable, cost effective option. As part of the LHC Group, we're equipped to provide high quality, professional care for a wide range of medical conditions. This includes:

  • Diabetes Mellitus
  • CHF
  • Hypertension
  • Stroke
  • Transplants
  • COPD
  • Cancer
  • Angina
  • Pneumonia
  • Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms

It's understandable that you might have questions at this point. In order to help you feel more at ease with home care and its benefits, we've provided answers to some of the more frequently asked questions by families.

Q: What exactly is home care?

A: These are specialized healthcare-related services that are provided by medical professionals in the comfort of your own home. Our services cover a wide range of medical, social and therapeutic treatments, as well as activities associated with daily living.

Q: Who covers its cost?

A: Generally, Medicare and/or Medicaid will cover the cost of home care for those patients over the age of 65 who meet either program's eligibility requirements. Private insurance companies, managed care organizations, CHAMPUS and worker's compensation may also pay for many of the services provided by a home care agency like ours. Those services not covered are considered "out of pocket" expenses and are the responsibility of the patient or another party.

Q: Who provides home care services?

A: Depending on your medical condition, your care may be provided by one of our trained medical professionals or a team of specialists on a part-time, intermittent, hourly or shift basis. Our staff includes registered and licensed practical nurses, therapists, social workers, dietitians and home care aides.

Q: What kinds of services are provided?

A: Licensed home care organizations such as ours provide a wide range of services. This includes catheter and tube care, cardiac and respiratory monitoring, diabetes management, wound care, in-home therapy and rehabilitation and pain management.

Q: How do I know if I qualify for these services?

A: Medicare has established guidelines to help patients determine if they qualify for home care services. Regardless of whether you're over 65 or not, their qualification criteria can be helpful in determining if you need home care services. Those needing home care services should be:

  • Unable to leave home without a considerable and taxing effort
  • Under the care of a physician
  • Receiving services under a plan of care established and periodically reviewed by a physician
  • In need of skilled nursing care on an intermittent basis, physical therapy, speech-language pathology or have continuing need for occupational therapy
