You want your birth experience to be just right. To help make that possible, the team at the Family Birthing Center - Baton Rouge goes above and beyond to make your journey memorable.

We’re the only birthing center in Baton Rouge where you can access midwives, OB/GYNs and intensive care specialists in a single location. Many women who give birth with us choose to work with one of our certified nurse midwives. These experts have extensive experience guiding women through vaginal childbirth.

We also provide comfortable birthing suites that feel less like a hospital and more like a hotel room. Features inside our labor and delivery rooms include:

  • Birthing tubs, which allow for water-based labor and/or delivery
  • Birth balls to reduce pain naturally and help move baby into the proper birthing position
  • Birthing stools that permit you to sit upright during birth
  • Wireless, waterproof monitoring that permits continual monitoring when necessary

Sometimes, a birthing experience doesn’t go as planned. In some cases, the baby gets distressed or has unexpected needs, or you may decide you would like an epidural during labor.

At the Family Birthing Center - Baton Rouge, we’re ready for anything. We offer immediate access to maternal fetal medicine specialists, anesthesiologists, a level 3 neonatal intensive care unit and more.

As a result, we offer our family birthing services to all women, including those with high-risk pregnancies. In the rare event your baby needs a higher level of care, we provide a simple, smooth transfer to another Ochsner facility.

While natural, breastfeeding doesn’t always come naturally. To help, our family birthing services include lactation consultation.

Our lactation consultants lend a hand in the following ways:

  • Prenatal class. Learn the basics of breastfeeding — how to get baby to latch on, how often to nurse and signs that baby has eaten enough. From proper technique to troubleshooting, this class gives you knowledge and confidence to breastfeed successfully.
  • Prenatal consultation. Before giving birth, you work one-on-one with a lactation consultant to develop an individualized breastfeeding plan that meets your needs.
  • Phone assistance. After heading home with baby for the first time, you have a lot of questions. If they involve breastfeeding, our telephone warm line can help. Simply call 225-755-4448 and leave a detailed message. A lactation consultant will return your call soon.
  • In-person planning. For more individualized attention than the warm line offers, you can schedule a one-on-one consultation with a lactation consultant for a fee. Please call 225-755-4448 to schedule your appointment.

We also offer breast pump rental. This family birthing service enables new mothers to try a hospital-grade breast pump before purchasing one. If interested in renting a breast pump, call 225-755-4448.

To help you make the best choices for you and baby, we offer an array of educational opportunities.

Childbirth classes and baby prep classes are free and cover topics including:

  • Baby basics
  • Breastfeeding
  • Labor and delivery
  • Medical interventions you may need during labor and delivery
  • Postpartum and baby safety

We also provide a free breastfeeding support group. At each meeting, you meet with other breastfeeding moms who discuss breastfeeding obstacles and successes.

As a bonus, our classes and support groups take place online. That way, you don’t have to find a way to come to the Family Birthing Center - Baton Rouge. You can learn and have your questions answered while relaxing at home. Find and register for classes with the click of a button.

Additional Information

Mom and Baby receive the highest quality care at Ochsner Family Center of Baton Rouge

We are proud of our quality figures and believe we have the best quality scores in the region.

Elective labor induction:

Since opening in 2010, the physicians and staff members of the Ochsner Family Birthing Center have adhered to the patient safety goal of a 0% elective induction rate prior to 39 1/2 weeks.

The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) publications have consistently advised against non-medically indicated elective deliveries prior to 39 ½ weeks gestation. Research findings indicate that early elective delivery with a medical indication is linked to infant deaths, and does not bring any benefit to mother or infant.

(Tita ATN, Landon MB, Spong CY, Lai Y, Leveno KJ, Varner MW, et al. Timing of elective cesarean delivery at term and neonatal outcomes. The New England Journal of Medicine 2009 January; 360;111-20.)

Patient Satisfaction

Ochsner Family Birthing Center patients rate their birthing experience in the 90th percentile as compared to all other similar sized hospitals in the country.

Just a few examples why our patients are satisfied with their experiences:

  • Previous C-Section patients are allowed the choice to attempt a vaginal birth if they so choose.
  • Laboring moms have continuous wireless monitoring so that they are never confined to the bed, if they so choose.
  • At the patients’ requests, we do more water births than any other hospital in the region.
