Dr. Joseph Benevento is a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in the medical and surgical management of diseases affecting the retina and vitreous. He comes to Ochsner Health with years of experience in clinical practice and training residents and fellows at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary and the Yale Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences. His clinical interests include age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachments, retinal vascular disease, ocular trauma, and other disorders of the retina.

Dr. Benevento utilizes state-of-the-art diagnostic testing and performs the full range of retinal procedures in the office and hospital settings including the scleral buckle, small incision sutureless vitrectomy, laser treatments and intraocular injections.

A graduate of Yale University and New York Medical College, Dr. Benevento completed his residency in ophthalmology at The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary and fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery at the University of Chicago. His research has been published in peer-reviewed journals and presented at national and international meetings, and he has participated in numerous clinical trials.
