After graduating from Jesuit High School in New Orleans, Dr. Joseph Biggio completed his undergraduate education at Drew University in biology and classics and earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Medicine. He completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology as well as a combined fellowship in maternal fetal medicine and clinical genetics, also at UAB. He is board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology, maternal fetal medicine, and clinical genetics. He has also earned a Master's of Science degree in healthcare quality and safety from the UAB School of Health Professions. Dr. Biggio is the System Co-Chair of Women's Service Line and System Chair for Maternal Fetal Medicine at Ochsner. In 2019, Dr. Biggio started the Maternal Fetal Medicine Fellowship program at Ochsner and he is currently the fellowship director. Prior to joining Ochsner in 2017, Dr. Biggio served as the John C. Hauth Endowed Professor and Director of the Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at UAB where he was also the Vice-Chair for Research and Quality and the Maternal Fetal Medicine Fellowship Director. He also served as the Associate Chief Medical Officer for UAB Hospital Women and Infants Center.He has been active in research and has more than 100 published manuscripts, abstracts, and chapters. In 2015, he received the March of Dimes Award for Best Research in Prematurity from the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine (SMFM) and received an Award for Research Excellence from SMFM in 2009 and 2010. He was a previous recipient of the National Faculty Award from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology. He was elected to membership in the American Gynecologic and Obstetric Society in 2015. He is a member of multiple national professional organizations including ACOG, where he has chaired the Committee on Genetics, and SMFM, where he is currently a member of the Board of Directors. He was also recently elected to serve on the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology Maternal Fetal Medicine Division. He has also been active in efforts regionally to improve the standardization of obstetric care aimed at reducing infant and maternal morbidity and mortality. He has a special clinical interest in prenatal diagnosis, ultrasound, prevention of preterm birth, and treatment of pregnancies complicated by maternal medical and fetal complications.

Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) physicians, or perinatologists, are subspecialty-trained obstetricians who specialize in high-risk pregnancies, to ensure a healthy outcome for the mother and the baby. Moms-to-be with chronic health issues or who face unexpected problems that develop during pregnancy may be referred to perinatologists by their obstetricians. Ochsner offers MFM services across Louisiana and Southern Mississippi, combining perinatal expertise and experience with modern and sophisticated technology, such as virtual physician-to-patient ultrasounds. The Women's Pavilion at Ochsner Baptist makes it easier for women of all ages to connect with the expert care they need. From gynecological and obstetrics visits, including gynecologic robotic surgery, to labor and delivery, the Women's Pavilion is the New Orleans destination for women's healthcare services.
